Mi primer día en la Diócesis de Fresno
Un día antes de mi primer día de trabajo como director del Ministerio Campesino en Fresno, el Obispo John Steinbock me dijo que iba a representar a la diócesis en una marcha del Primero de Mayo para trabajadores inmigrantes en el centro de Fresno. Dijo que habría unos pocos miles de manifestantes y que se me pediría que hiciera una invocación antes de la marcha en inglés y español. Dijo: “Sólo dura tres minutos”. Casi nadie sabía quién era yo, pero estaba representando a la Iglesia Católica. Esta fue la invocación:

O God, seven years ago at the canonization of Juan Diego in Mexico, Pope John Paul II spoke on behalf of the indigenous people of Mexico in front of President Fox. He said, “The indigenous need Mexico and Mexico needs its indigenous”. Today we march proclaiming that: “Immigrants need the United States and the United States needs its immigrants.”
O Dios, hace siete años, en la canonización de San Juan Diego, el Santo Papa Juan Pablo II declaró a favor del pueblo indígena, enfrente de Presidente Fox, “Los indígenas necesitan a México y México necesita a los indígenas.” Hoy marchamos proclamando que: “Los migrantes necesitan a los Estados Unidos, y los Estados Unidos necesitan a los migrantes.”
We march peacefully with those who have marched before us in the cause of justice, with: Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bobby Kennedy, Archbishop Oscar Romero and our own Cesar Chavez.
We ask your blessing, Lord, on our journey towards justice for immigrants. May the Virgin be with us, may Jesus lead us and may God bless us.
Marchamos hoy con los que han marchado por la causa de la justicia, con Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bobby Kennedy, Arzobispo Oscar Romero y nuestro hermano Cesar Chávez.

My First Day in the Diocese of Fresno
A day before my first day on the job as Director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno, Bishop John Steinbock told me that I was to represent the diocese at a May First march for immigrant workers in downtown Fresno. He said there will be a few thousand marchers, and you will be asked to give an invocation before the march in English and Spanish. He said, “It is only for three minutes.” Almost no one in knew who I was, but I was representing the Catholic Church. Here was the Invocation:
