¿Qué es el Ministerio Campesino?
Al principio de mi trabajo como Director del Ministerio Campesino en Fresno (2009), me pidieron que definiera el ministerio con los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes. Definí el ministerio en tres aspectos:
Primero, evangelizar y apoyar la fe de los trabajadores cuyas vidas dependen del ritmo de la granja, que a menudo los excluye del horario parroquial típico. Es mostrar un camino para “seguir a Cristo y recibir la gracia de la presencia de Cristo, especialmente en los sacramentos”.
Segundo, satisfacer las necesidades físicas, emocionales y sociales de los trabajadores migrantes. Es conectar al campesino con recursos en seguridad, salud, educación y participación en la comunidad local.
Tercero, defender y honrar la dignidad y la herencia de los trabajadores y apoyar su vida familiar y sus valores morales.
Es fácil identificar las dificultades en la vida campesina. A menudo, el trabajo es temporal, requiere una variedad de habilidades, horarios de trabajo inconsistentes que conducen a la inseguridad diaria, viajes largos a menudo con poca o ninguna compensación por el viaje y separación frecuente de la familia. Todo esto se magnifica si el trabajador o algún familiar carece de estatus migratorio. El Ministerio Campesino involucra todos los aspectos de la vida del trabajador agrícola.

What is Campesino Ministry?
Early in my time as Director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno (2009), I was asked to define ministry with migrant farmworkers. I defined the ministry as threefold:
First, to evangelize and support the faith of workers whose lives are dependent on the rhythm of the farm, often shutting them out of the typical parish schedule. It is to show a path to “follow Christ and receive the grace of Christ’s presence especially in the sacraments.”
Second, to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of migrant workers. It is connecting the campesino to resources in safety, health, education and participation in the local community.
Third, to defend and honor the dignity and heritage of the workers and support their family life and moral values.
It is easy to identify difficulties in campesino life. Often the work is temporary, requiring a variety of skills, inconsistent hours of work that lead to day-to-day insecurity, traveling long distances often with little or no compensation for the travel, and frequent separation from the family. All of this is magnified if the worker or a family member lacks immigration status. Campesino Ministry engages every aspect of the farmworker’s life.
