Perdiendo esperanza
El domingo por la noche celebré la Misa a las 6:30 pm. Después de la Misa, un vagabundo pidió comida. Le pregunté dónde vivía. Se derrumbó y lloró un momento. Finalmente, dijo que dormía donde podía en la calle. Es uno de los sin casa que no tiene lugar donde descansa, ni una familia en la que confiar. Le di algo de ayuda para conseguir la cena. Pidió una bendición, me dio las gracias y fue a buscar un lugar en el parque para pasar la noche.
Empezó a llover. Fue una fuerte lluvia durante varias horas. Me pregunté si el hombre encontraría un lugar con protección de la lluvia. Por la mañana, yo caminaba por el parque, gran parte estaba inundado. Normalmente en ese parque puede haber 100 personas durmiendo en bancos o en el suelo.
Los migrantes que he conocido durante los últimos meses no han perdido la esperanza. Al menos no todavía. Incluso en su desesperación, se vigilan mutuamente. Al visitar a algunos de los que han viajado desde la frontera sur de México hacia el norte, hay una resiliencia expresada por los migrantes. La mayoría ha salido de situaciones muy desesperadas, pero es su esperanza lo que los mantiene en marcha. Cuando también tienen un fundamento de fe, el camino es posible.
Sin embargo, el camino migrante desafía la esperanza y la fe de los migrantes. En el camino, hay tentaciones de perder sus propios valores y rendirse. El vagabundo que conocí emigró del sur de México al norte, pero se ha encontrado solo, sobreviviendo momento a momento.
Es fácil admirar a aquellos cuya esperanza y fe no han flaqueado, pero hay muchos migrantes tentados a perder sus sueños, a perder la esperanza. Algunos pueden seguir las tentaciones de los traficantes y otros pueden ser como el migrante que conocí el domingo. Espero que haya encontrado refugio esa noche, pero, sobre todo, que recupere la esperanza que inició su migración hacia el norte.

Losing Hope
On Sunday evening, I celebrated Mass at 6:30 pm. After the Mass, a homeless man asked for food. I asked where he lived. He broke down and cried a moment. Finally, he said that he slept wherever he could on the street. He is one of the many people who have no place to lay his head, and no family to rely on. I gave him some help to get a meal. He asked for a blessing, thanked me and went to find a place in the park for the night.
It began to rain. It was a heavy rain for several hours. I wondered if the man found a place with some shelter from the rain. In the morning, as I walked in the park, much of it was flooded. Usually in that park, there may be 100 people sleeping on benches or on the ground.
The migrants whom I have met during the last few months have not lost hope. At least, not yet. Even in their desperation, they keep an eye on each other. Visiting with some of those who have traveled from the southern border of Mexico to the north, there is a resilience expressed by the migrants. Most have left very desperate situations, but it is their hope that keeps them going. When they also have a foundation of faith, the journey is possible.
However, the migration trail challenges the hope and faith of migrants. Along the way, there are temptations to compromise one’s values and to give up. The homeless man that I met migrated from the south of Mexico to the north, but has found himself alone, surviving moment to moment.
It is easy to admire those whose hope and faith have not wavered, but there are many migrants tempted to lose their dreams, to lose hope. Some may follow the temptations of the traffickers, and others may be like migrant I met on Sunday. I hope that he found shelter that evening, but most of all, may he regain the hope that initiated his migration to the north.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
