Looking for Peace / Buscando paz

Buscando paz

Looking for Peace

War goes on in the Ukraine. More and more oppressive actions are seen in Russia. Refugees are fleeing countries in Central and South America because of corruption and oppression. Gun violence in the United States continues to increase. Deaths from drug abuses are seen in all classes within society. To believe that peace is possible, today, we may hear the words, “April Fool’s.” Yet, we gain nothing by giving up.

Pope Paul VI famously said, “If you want peace, work for justice.” And Pope John Paul II said, “There is no peace without justice, and there is no justice without forgiveness.” As we celebrate Holy Week, we remember the greatest sign of love. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Tomorrow, we celebrate Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, and we raise our palm branches shouting, “Hosanna.” Then we read the Passion of Jesus, that lets us know that seeking peace is not easy. It takes: faith, sacrifice, courage, trust and forgiveness. May we let our experience of Holy Week, bless us with the strength to be peacemakers in our homes, our parishes, our communities and in all that we do. We can experience peace, if we work for justice. We can experience justice if we learn how to forgive.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
