Caminando en el camino Cristo
Jesús dijo: “Yo soy el Camino”. (Jn. 14:6) Durante su vida, Jesús fue un predicador itinerante. Sus viajes fueron dentro de su propio país. Fue un maestro misionero. No se quedó en una comunidad, sino que llevó su mensaje a otras. Cuando la gente vino a verlo después de los milagros de curación en Cafarnaúm, dijo: “Yo tengo que anunciar también a las otras ciudades la Buena Nueva del Reino de Dios, porque para eso he sido enviado”. (Lc. 4:43) Era un trabajador temporal, proclamando la Buena Nueva a todos los que tenían oídos para oír.
Viajó con sus discípulos, moviéndose de comunidad en comunidad predicando la Palabra. Tomó el mensaje para buscar a los perdidos. Su ministerio no fue uno de los predicadores locales, adorando con una comunidad fija. Era un pastor de un rebaño vagamente conectado. Él dijo de sí mismo: “Los zorros tienen cuevas y las aves tienen nidos, pero el Hijo del Hombre ni siquiera tiene dónde recostar la cabeza”. (Mateo 8:20)
La gente decía que no predicaba como los otros rabinos. Su palabra tenía una autoridad basada en su autenticidad. Vivió como predicó. Podía llamar a la gente a un compromiso radical con Dios y el Camino, pero también podía mostrar la misericordia y la compasión de Dios. No hubo nadie excluido de su mensaje. La prostituta, el recaudador de impuestos, los enfermos, los lisiados, la mujer cinco veces casada, el ladrón y todos los grandes y pequeños fueron acogidos en su Camino.
Cuando comencé a aprender español, un padre me dijo que necesitaba caminar con la comunidad hispana. “Si no andas con mi gente, no te molestes en aprender español”. He caminado con la comunidad hispana como predicador itinerante. He viajado por los Estados Unidos y México como misionero, y reconozco la bendición que me dio mi mentor que me dijo que caminara con su pueblo. La Escritura, la teología y la liturgia nos informan en la fe, pero el hombre común, el trabajador del campo, los maestros y cuidadores de los enfermos, los comerciantes y hosteleros, y los pobres me muestran el Camino de Jesús.

Walking in the path Christ
Jesus said, “I am the way.” (Jn. 14:6) During his life, Jesus was an itinerant preacher. His travels were within his own country. He was a missionary teacher. He did not stay in one community, but took his message to others. When people came to see him after miracles of healing in Capernaum, he said, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” (Lk. 4:43) He was a temporary worker, proclaiming Good News to all who had ears to hear.
He traveled with his disciples, moving from community to community preaching the Word. He took the message to seek out the lost. His ministry was not one of the local preachers, worshipping with a fixed community. He was a pastor of a loosely connected flock. He said of himself, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” (Mt. 8:20)
The people said that he did not preach like the other rabbis. His word had an authority based on his authenticity. He lived as he preached. He could call people to a radical commitment to God and the Way, but he could also show the mercy and compassion of God. There was no one excluded from his message. The prostitute, the tax collector, the sick, the crippled, the woman married five times, the thief and anyone great and small were welcomed to his Way.
I was told when I first began learning Spanish that I needed to walk with the Hispanic community. “If you do not walk with my people, don’t bother learning Spanish.” I have walked with the Hispanic community as an itinerant preacher. I have traveled throughout the United States and Mexico as a missionary, and recognize the blessing given to me by my mentor who told me to walk with his people. Scripture, theology and liturgy inform us in the faith, but the common person, the worker in the fields, the teachers and care givers for the sick, the merchants and hospitality workers, and the poor show me the Way of Jesus.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
