Falta de atención espiritual a los pobres
Mi participación en el ministerio de trabajadores agrícolas migrantes comenzó en 1998, en The Dalles, OR. Ya había estado inmerso en el Ministerio Hispano, con cinco años trabajando con jóvenes del centro de la ciudad de Denver y tres años ofreciendo misiones bilingües parroquiales. Por invitación de horticultores, pasé dos veranos celebrando Misas en campamentos de migrantes. Unos misioneros laicos me acompañaron ayudando en programas para niños de verano en la Iglesia de San Pedro y ayudando en las Misas. Los misioneros ofrecieron una liturgia de la palabra para a los niños, mientras yo ofrecía la homilía para sus padres.
En 1999, les pregunté a los campesinos qué más podía hacer si regrese el verano siguiente. Una mujer dijo: “No necesitamos que sea nuestro abogado, médico o trabajador social. Necesitamos que sea nuestro sacerdote”. Durante las cuatro semanas, escuché a muchas personas decir que dentro de la Iglesia, los servicios de caridad dentro de la Iglesia brindaban: asistencia alimentaria y de vivienda, asistencia legal, apoyo médico y educativo. Lo que les faltaba era la atención a sus necesidades espirituales y la recepción de los sacramentos para sus hijos.
Muchos de los trabajadores tenían hijos de ocho a veinte años que nunca recibieron la Primera Comunión. Había muchos que vivían en comunidades con programas de preparación sacramental que no respondían a las necesidades particulares de los pobres de las zonas rurales. Esta no fue la experiencia en todas las parroquias, pero había suficientes familias sin acceso a la inclusión sacramental de sus hijos que iniciamos en el año 2000 una misión sacramental que preparó a más de cincuenta niños para su Primera Comunión.
He escrito de estos programas durante los últimos dos años y he escrito de la necesidad de tener programas extraordinarios para satisfacer las necesidades especiales de los pobres. Los programas que he llevado a cabo para trabajadores agrícolas y otras comunidades más pobres siempre han recibido el apoyo de mi comunidad, líderes religiosos y obispos. No es difícil iniciar programas para necesidades y comunidades específicas. Financiar los programas, la capacitación y certificación de catequistas y obtener acceso a las parroquias locales a veces crea tensiones, pero se pueden abordar con gracia.
Fue una gran bendición leer al Papa Francisco decir: “Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. (EG. 200) Sus palabras nos inspiran mientras nos preparamos para ofrecer atención espiritual a los migrantes, refugiados y solicitantes de asilo. Fueron las palabras de una mujer trabajadora agrícola migrante, quince años antes de que el Papa Francisco escribiera la Alegría del Evangelio, quien lo dijo tan bien: “Necesitamos que sea nuestro sacerdote”.

Lack of spiritual care for the poor
My involvement in migrant farmworker ministry began in 1998, in The Dalles, Oregon. I had already been immersed in Hispanic Ministry, with five years working with inner-city youth in Denver and three years offering bilingual parish missions in over ten states. At the invitation of orchardists in The Dalles, I spent two summers saying Masses in migrant camps, and several lay missionaries accompanied me helping in summer bible camps offered at St. Peter´s Church and helping at the Masses, offering the children reflections on the readings of the Mass, while I offered a homily for their parents.
In 1999, I asked the farmworkers what more I could do for them the following summer. One woman said, “We do not need you to be our lawyer, doctor or social worker. We need you to be our priest.” During the four weeks of Masses that summer, I heard many people telling me that within the Church, they received services of charities within the Church that provided: food and housing assistance, legal aide, medical and educational support. What they lacked was attention to their spiritual needs and the reception of sacraments for their children.
Many of the workers had children from eight to twenty years old who never received their First Communion. There were many who lived in communities with sacramental preparation programs that failed to respond to particular needs of the rural poor. This was not the experience in all parishes, but there were enough families lacking access to sacramental inclusion of their children that we initiated in 2000 a sacramental mission that prepared over fifty children for their First Communion.
I have written about these programs several times during the past two years, and have written about the need for extraordinary programs to meet the special needs of the poor. The programs that I have run for farmworkers and other poorer communities have always received support from my community, religious leaders and Bishops. It is not difficult to initiate programs for specific needs and communities. Funding the programs, training and certification of catechists and gaining access to local parishes sometimes create tensions, but can be addressed with grace.
It was a great blessing to read Pope Francis say, “I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” (EG. 200) His words inspire us as we prepare to offer spiritual care for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. It was the words of a migrant farmworker woman, fifteen years before Pope Francis wrote the Joy of the Gospel, who said it so well, “We need you to be our priest.”

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
