Tuve una valiosa lección hoy. Reservé un vuelo en una aerolínea que no he utilizado durante casi diez años. Tenía una cuenta de viajero frecuente con la aerolínea, pero no era una aerolínea con vuelos desde aeropuertos cerca de nuestra comunidad en Mississippi, donde viví desde 2015 hasta 2020, luego COVID limitó mis vuelos. Cuando reservé mi vuelo, no recordé mi número de viajero frecuente. Llamé a la aerolínea para que me ayudaran a encontrar mi número.
Quiero agradecer a una asistente maravillosa que comenzó a hacerme preguntas que no podía responder. Como mi cuenta no tendría actividad durante al menos ocho años, descubrió que había dos cuentas a mi nombre. Ambas eran mis cuentas. Seguramente, confundí a la aerolínea con tantos cambios de mis direcciones. Aparte de tener diferentes correos electrónicos, toda la demás información era mía. Para verificar que era mi cuenta, hizo muchas preguntas, que supongo que la mayoría de la gente sabría, pero dado que me he mudado diez veces en los últimos veinticinco años y he tenido ocho números de teléfono diferentes en ese tiempo, no pude responder a las preguntas que ella pidió.

La mujer que me ayudó fue excelente, ya que trató y trató de relacionarme con la cuenta. Finalmente habló con un superior, segura de que tenía la cuenta adecuada para mí, y recibí acceso a mi cuenta de viajero frecuente.
Mientras cuento esta historia, imagine a personas en situación de pobreza y estabilidad limitada tratando de responder a preguntas sobre sus vidas durante muchos años. Familias jóvenes que intentan consolidarse en carreras, cuyo trabajo requiere varias mudanzas, incluso mudanzas internacionales. Imagine a los jóvenes que alquilan casas y apartamentos, mudándose muchas veces antes de establecer una residencia permanente. Imagínese estar sin hogar o trabajar en trabajos de temporada en la agricultura, la construcción o el turismo.
Nuevamente, agradezco a la mujer de la aerolínea que me ayudó. Reconoció que muchas preguntas rutinarias, no se ajustan a la vida de muchas personas hoy en día. Recuerdo a un párroco hablando de su comunidad. Era una comunidad de trabajadores agrícolas, con trabajadores en los campos, en empacadoras y en camiones. Dijo: “En esta comunidad, lo extraordinario es lo ordinario y lo ordinario es lo extraordinario”.

I had a valuable lesson today. I booked a flight on an airline that I have not used for almost ten years. I had a frequent flyer account with the airline, but it was not an airline with many flights from airports near our community in Mississippi where I lived from 2015 to 2020, then COVID limited my flying. When I booked my flight, I could not remember my frequent flyer number. So, I called the airline for help finding my number.
I want to say thank you to a wonderful assistant who began asking me questions that I could not answer. Since my account would not have any activity for at least eight years, she discovered that there were two accounts in my name. They were both my accounts. I must have messed things up for them years ago. Other than having different emails, all the other information was mine. To verify that it was my account she asked a lot of questions, that I suppose most people would know, but since I have moved ten times in the past twenty-five years and I have had eight different cell-phone numbers in that time, I could not answer questions that she posed.
What is the address on the account? After ten moves in 25 years, I remember the Redemptorist communities, the parishes, the missions, but the physical addresses, I do not remember. What is the phone number on the account? I probably attached a cell phone number to the account, but in the early years of cell phones, each time I moved, I changed the number to have a local number for the ministry where I worked. After eight moves, I hope that I may keep my present number for a longer period, but I do not remember my old numbers. Where did you go on your last flight on this airline?It was over eight years ago, I do not remember.
The woman helping me was great as she tried and tried to relate me to the account. She finally talked with a superior, confident that she had the right account for me, and I received access to my frequent flyer account.
As I tell this story, imagine people of poverty and limited stability trying to answer questions about their lives over many years. Young families trying to establish themselves in careers, whose work requires several moves, even international moves. Imagine young people who rent homes and apartments, moving many times before establishing a permanent residence. Imagine being homeless or working seasonal jobs in agriculture, construction or tourism.
Again, I thank the woman at the airline who helped me. She recognized that many routine questions, do not fit the lives of many people today. I remember a parish priest speaking of his community. It was a farm working community, with workers in the fields, in packing houses and in trucking. He said, “In this community, the extraordinary is the ordinary and the ordinary is the extraordinary.”
May we be understanding of the extraordinary lives of the poor and the migrant.
