Expectativas Altas
No sean víctimas de bajas expectativas. Considere la atención que el Papa Francisco llama a la fe de los pobres. “La gran mayoría de los pobres tienen una especial apertura a la fe”. (EG 200) Dentro de la sociedad e incluso dentro de la Iglesia muchos tienen bajas expectativas de los pobres. Una de las alegrías de mi caminar con migrantes e inmigrantes es que cuando los pobres experimentan alguna bendición, reconocen el bien que han recibido y agradecen. Con demasiada frecuencia, los pobres experimentan el castigo en lugar del estímulo. Cuando la persona pobre experimenta el respeto y toma conciencia de su dignidad, grandes cosas son posibles.
Cuando iniciamos Casa San Alfonso en Denver, invitamos a los jóvenes a venir y ver cómo vivíamos, diciendo: “nuestra casa es tu casa”. Los jóvenes de la calle del centro de la ciudad vinieron a nuestra casa y experimentaron aliento. Experimentaron demasiadas bajas expectativas de la sociedad que los rodeaba. Respondiendo a la pregunta “¿qué aprendiste en la Casa?”, un hombre dijo: “Llegué a conocer mi propia dignidad y la dignidad de los demás. Mi fe me llamó a respetarme a mí mismo ya los demás”.
Años después, hablé con un párroco en una sacristía sobre nuestra comunidad de jóvenes. Dijo que no conocería a ninguno de ellos cuando celebráramos una Misa por un aniversario de la casa. Varios miembros de la comunidad de la Casa entraron a la sacristía. Un esposo y una esposa eran bien conocidos en la diócesis como directores musicales. Le hablaron de una mujer que no pudo estar presente y que era muy activa en el liderazgo diocesano. Entraron dos parejas que ayudan en la preparación matrimonial en esa parroquia. El pastor se volvió hacia mí y me dijo: “Padre, estos son algunos de los líderes hispanos más activos de la diócesis”. Y le dije: “Sí, y hace treinta años eran jóvenes de la calle”.
Algunos creen que soy ingenuo, pero creo que los pobres prosperan cuando tienen expectativas altas, en lugar de expectativas bajas. Incluso pueden elevarse a expectativas más altas de lo que ellos mismos imaginan.

High Expectations
Do not be victims of low expectations. Consider the attention that Pope Francis calls to the faith of the poor. “The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith.” (EG 200) Society as a whole and even within the Church many have low expectations of the poor. One of the joys of my walking with migrants and immigrants is that when the poor experience any blessing, they recognize the good that they have received and are grateful. Too often the poor experience chastisement rather than encouragement. When the poor person experiences respect and becomes aware of their dignity, great things are possible.
When we ran Casa San Alfonso in Denver, we invited youth to come and see how we lived, saying, “our house is your house.” Inner city street youth came to our house and experienced encouragement. They experienced too many low expectations from society around them. Responding to the question, “what did you learn at the Casa?”, one man said, “I came to know my own dignity and the dignity of others. My faith called me to respect myself and others.”
Years later, I spoke with a pastor in a sacristy of our youth community. He said that he would not know any of them when we celebrated a Mass for an anniversary of the house. Several members of the Casa community came into the sacristy. A husband and wife were well known in the diocese as music directors. They told him about one woman unable to be present who was very active in diocesan leadership. Two couples who help with marriage preparation in that parish. The pastor turned to me and said, “Fr. Mike, these are some of the most active Hispanic leaders in the diocese.” I then said to him, “Yes and thirty years ago they were street kids.”
Some believe that I am naive, but I believe that the poor thrive when they have high expectations, rather than low expectations. They may even rise to higher expectations that they themselves imagine.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
