“Le dio su tiempo”
Fratelli Tutti. 63: Jesús cuenta que había un hombre herido, tirado en el camino, que había sido asaltado. Pasaron varios a su lado, pero huyeron, no se detuvieron. Eran personas con funciones importantes en la sociedad, que no tenían en el corazón el amor por el bien común. No fueron capaces de perder unos minutos para atender al herido o al menos para buscar ayuda. Uno se detuvo, le regaló cercanía, lo curó con sus propias manos, puso también dinero de su bolsillo y se ocupó de él. Sobre todo, le dio algo que en este mundo ansioso retaceamos tanto: le dio su tiempo. Seguramente él tenía sus planes para aprovechar aquel día según sus necesidades, compromisos o deseos. Pero fue capaz de dejar todo a un lado ante el herido, y sin conocerlo lo consideró digno de dedicarle su tiempo.
En esta reflexión, el Papa Francisco llama la atención a darnos verdaderamente a las necesidades de los pobres, los sin techo, los migrantes, los refugiados, los extraños. A menudo en la vida estamos ocupados, e incluso cuando tratamos de ayudar a una persona pobre, es más fácil ofrecerle unos dólares que darle nuestro tiempo. Algunos de los momentos más impresionantes de mi vida han sido cuando tuve necesidad, me ha sorprendido la generosidad de las personas que me han dado tiempo para ayudarme cuando necesitaba ayuda.
Hace años, en la década de 1970, conducía para celebrar misa en un pequeño pueblo de Kansas. De repente, la manguera del radiador se rompió y tuve que detenerme al costado del camino. Abrí el capó del coche y una columna de vapor salió del motor. Un granjero paró detrás de mí y me sorprendió cuando me tocó el hombro y me preguntó: “¿Necesitas ayuda?”. Sacó una navaja, aflojó la abrazadera de la manguera, cortó la manguera, empujó el resto de la manguera en su lugar, reemplazó la abrazadera, fue a su camioneta y sacó una lata de agua, llenó el radiador y yo estaba listo para ir a Misa. Traté de pagarle algo y me dijo: “No. Solo siendo un vecino”.
El incidente no tomó mucho tiempo, pero en ese momento, necesitaba su tiempo y él era mi prójimo. Que consideremos la bendición de dar nuestro tiempo a las personas necesitadas.

Fratelli Tutti, 63: Jesus tells the story of a man assaulted by thieves and lying injured on the wayside. Several persons passed him by, but failed to stop. These were people holding important social positions, yet lacking in real concern for the common good. They would not waste a couple of minutes caring for the injured man, or even in calling for help. Only one person stopped, approached the man and cared for him personally, even spending his own money to provide for his needs. He also gave him something that in our frenetic world we cling to tightly: he gave him his time. Certainly, he had his own plans for that day, his own needs, commitments and desires. Yet he was able to put all that aside when confronted with someone in need. Without even knowing the injured man, he saw him as deserving of his time and attention.
In this reflection, Pope Francis calls attention to truly giving of ourselves to the needs of the poor, the homeless, the migrant, the refugee, the other. Often in life we are busy, and even in our trying to help a poor person, it is easier to offer the person a few dollars than to give of our time. Some of the most impressive times of my life have been when in need, I have been surprised by the generosity of people giving time to help me when I needed help.
Years ago, in the 1970’s, I was driving to say Mass in a small town in Kansas. Suddenly the radiator hose burst, and I had to stop by the side of the road. I opened the hood of the car and a plume of steam rose from the engine. A farmer had pulled up behind me, and I was surprised when he touched my shoulder and he asked, “Need some help?” He pulled out a pocketknife, loosen the clamp on the hose, cut the hose at the break, shoved the rest of the hose in place, replaced the clamp, went to his truck and pulled out a water can, filled the radiator and I was ready to go on for Mass. I tried to pay him something and he said, “No. Just being a neighbor.”
The incident did not take a long time, but at that moment, I needed his time, and he was neighbor to me. May we consider the blessing of giving our time to people in need.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
