¿Buenas o malas noticias?
¿Cuál preferimos escuchar? ¿Buenas noticias? o malas noticias? Como predicador, proclamo la “Buena Nueva”. Es fácil proclamar la Buena Nueva si hablamos de Jesús, pero ¿estamos dispuestos a escucharla? Jesús escandalizó a muchos comiendo y bebiendo con cobradores de impuestos, prostitutas y pecadores. Era demasiado bueno para ser verdad que Dios pudiera perdonar y amar a tales personas.
En el evangelio de Juan, nos dice: “Dios no envió al Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que se salve el mundo gracias a él”. (Jn 3,17) La Buena Nueva de la salvación inspira y da esperanza a un mundo herido. Jesús reconoció la ley, diciendo que vino a cumplir la ley. No enmendó ni cambió la ley. Durante el Sermón de la Montaña, dijo: “En verdad les digo: mientras dure el cielo y la tierra, no pasará una letra o una coma de la Ley hasta que todo se realice”. (Mt 5,18) Sin embargo, al final de la Última Cena, dio un nuevo mandamiento: “Ámense unos a los otros, como yo los he amado”. (Juan 13:34)
La naturaleza humana tiene una tendencia a ser pesimista, negativa. Es más fácil escuchar las noticias negativas, el chisme y la mentira. Es la mala noticia que se presenta en la televisión, el radio y los periódicos. Las “malas noticias” son una fuente de entretenimiento. En el ciclo de noticias de 24 horas de hoy, lo que vende es la tragedia, la corrupción y el escándalo. “¿Quién se beneficia de las ‘malas noticias’?”
Hoy, alguien preguntó: “¿No tienes miedo de viajar en México?” La pregunta me pareció extraña. Amo México y aunque hay lugares donde uno puede no sentirse seguro, hay partes de algunas de nuestras ciudades que también puede evitar. Estoy seguro de que el interrogador tiene poco conocimiento personal de México. Todo lo que ve y escucha son informes basados en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Una de las mejores cosas de estar en México durante los últimos cuatro meses es no ver ni escuchar los noticieros estadounidenses todos los días. Recién al regresar a los Estados Unidos me di cuenta de cuánto más pacifica es la vida cuando no se escuchan las constantes ‘malas noticias’ presentadas en nuestros medios.
Me tomé un descanso de los noticieros estadounidenses durante cuatro meses. Mi vista de la vida y mi paz personal ha sido mucho mejor. Antes era un adicto a las noticias, pero cuando regresé, me di cuenta de que no me perdía nada al no estar demasiado involucrado en las malas noticias presentadas en nuestras televisiones. Si quieres una vida feliz, apégate a la Buena Nueva.

Good News or Bad News?
Which do we prefer to hear? Good News? or Bad News? As a preacher, I am to proclaim the “Good News”. It is easy to proclaim Good News if we are speaking about Jesus, but are we willing to listen to it? Jesus scandalized many by eating and drinking with tax collectors, prostitutes and sinners. It was too good to be true that God could forgive and love such people.
In the gospel of John, we are told, “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (Jn 3:17) The Good News of salvation inspires and gives hope to our wounded world. Jesus recognized the law of the Old Testament, saying that he came to fulfill the law. He did not amend or change the law. During the Sermon on the Mount, he said, “Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Mt 5:18) Yet at the end of the Last Supper he gave a new commandment, “Love one another, as I have loved you.” (Jn. 13:34)
Human nature has a tendency to be pessimistic, negative. It is easier to listen to the negative news, the gossip and the lie. It is bad news that is presented on television, radio and in newspapers. The “bad news” is a source of entertainment. In the 24-hour news cycle of today it is tragedy, corruption and scandal that sells. “Who benefits from the ‘bad news’?”
Today, someone asked, “Aren’t you afraid traveling in Mexico?” The question struck me as odd. I love Mexico and while there are places where one may not feel safe, there are parts of some of our cities that I may avoid also. I am certain that the questioner has little personal knowledge of Mexico. All she sees and hears are reports based on the United States / Mexico border. One of the best things about being in Mexico for the past four months is not seeing and hearing American newscasts every day. Only on returning to the states did I realize how much more pleasant life is when not listening to the constant ‘bad news’ presented on our media.
I took a break from American news casts for four months. My view of life and my personal peace has been so much better. I can tend to be a news junky, but when I returned, I realized that I did not miss a thing by not being too engaged in the bad news presented on our televisions. If you want a happier life, stick to the Good News.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
