Primer Domingo de Adviento
“Cumpliré la promesa que hice a la casa de Israel y Judá”.
“Judá estará a salvo y Jerusalén estará segura”.
“Que el Señor los llene y los haga rebosar de un amor mutuo y hacia todos los demás, como el que yo les tengo a ustedes.”
Mientras seguimos viviendo en la oscuridad de una pandemia y una sociedad dividida, las lecturas del primer domingo de Adviento ofrecen esperanza, seguridad, justicia y amor para todos. Hay bastante dolor que nos anhelar las “buenas nuevas” de Jesús. He sido bendecido con la oportunidad de caminar con personas al margen de la sociedad y la Iglesia. Al reconocer nuestra impotencia y necesidad, la fe adquiere un significado real.
COVID ha limitado muchas prácticas religiosas tradicionales de católicos hispanos. Muchas prácticas de celebración de la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se llevan a cabo en hogares familiares. Los grupos de matachines y los coros se preparan durante semanas para celebrar la fiesta en sus iglesias. Grupos de jóvenes se preparan para presentar dramas de las Apariciones. Muchas comunidades celebran una novena en honor a María. En la fiesta puede haber una serenata a la Virgen en la noche del 11 de diciembre. El 12 de diciembre habrá “Las Mañanitas”. Se realizan misas durante el día y una fiesta vespertina.
Cuando comencé a trabajar en el ministerio hispano, a menudo llamaba a mi madre para contarle de las reuniones tradicionales que se llevaban a cabo en nuestra comunidad. Le encantaba la idea de celebrar tanto por el Adviento. Sentía envidia de las celebraciones de Adviento de la comunidad hispana y preguntaba: “¿Por qué no tenemos tales celebraciones?”
Que Dios nos bendiga a todos durante el Adviento. Preparemos el camino del Señor.

As we continue to live in the darkness of a pandemic and a divided society, our readings for the first Sunday of Advent offer hope, security, justice and love for all. There is enough pain and hurt around us to make us yearn for the “good news” of Jesus. I have been blessed with the opportunity to walk with people on the margins of society and the Church. It is in recognizing our powerlessness and need that faith takes on real meaning.
COVID has limited many of the traditional religious practices of Hispanic Catholics. Many practices of celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe take place in family homes. Dance groups and music groups prepare for weeks to celebrate the feast in their parish churches. Youth groups prepare to present dramas about the Apparitions of the Virgin to Juan Diego. Many communities celebrate a novena honoring Mary. On the Feast there may be a serenata to the Virgin on the evening of Dec. 11. On Dec. 12 there will be sunrise services called “Las Mañanitas”. Masses during the Day and an evening Mass and fiesta take place.
When I first began working in Hispanic ministry, I often called my mother to tell her about traditional gatherings taking place in our Hispanic community preparing for our celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and then the Posadas. She was envious of the Advent celebrations of the Hispanic community asking, “Why don’t we have such celebrations?”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
