Primera Respuesta a los solicitantes de asilo
Refugiados y solicitantes de asilo llegan a las fronteras de naciones de todo el mundo todos los días. Hay naciones del mundo que a los que huyen de la desesperación les parecen un respiro en su búsqueda de un lugar al que llamar hogar para ellos y sus familias. El refugiado cree que su tierra natal no es segura. Buscan la libertad y la oportunidad de criar a sus familias en paz. Muchos esperan poder regresar a su lugar de origen para reencontrarse con sus seres queridos, pero ahora no es el momento. No están seguros de adónde van y si serán recibidos en una nueva nación. Su número es tan grande que, idealmente, todas las naciones del mundo cooperarían para hacerles espacio de forma temporal o incluso permanente. En este momento, los refugiados viven en condiciones extremas y luchan por sobrevivir.
Hay personas generosas en todo el mundo que trabajan como socorristas para personas en crisis. Atienden centros y refugios que brindan asistencia de emergencia a los refugiados. La respuesta se recoge en muchas comunidades religiosas que ofrecen comida, refugio, atención médica, asistencia legal y muchos servicios sociales. Personas de todo el mundo oran por las personas desesperadas del mundo. A menudo, al ver la multitud de personas que necesitan asistencia, nuestros primeros respondedores reconocen cuántas más personas necesitan ayuda de las que podemos atender. Nunca hay fin para los necesitados.
Honestamente, como sociedad, somos bastante buenos para ofrecer ayuda en momentos de crisis, pero después de que la persona recibe la comida, la ropa, la atención médica y recibe algunos consejos sobre cómo acceder a la ayuda, el extraño tiene que encontrar trabajo, refugio y crear un nuevo hogar. El migrante busca estabilidad en un nuevo entorno, y toma tiempo antes de que uno se sienta como en casa. Pasar de sobrevivir a la crisis de la migración a establecerse en una parroquia, un barrio, un nuevo país, requiere tiempo y ayuda.
Necesitamos un ministerio de Segunda Respuesta para los migrantes. Es un camino para que migrantes se conviertan en inmigrantes. Cruzar una frontera no es suficiente para convertir a un migrante en inmigrante. Pregunte a los inmigrantes cuánto tiempo les tomó sentirse como en casa en los Estados Unidos. Obtendrá una variedad de respuestas. Algunos se sintieron bien recibidos ya que tenían amigos y familiares que los ayudaron a establecerse. Ellos son los afortunados. Muchos de los que encontraron fácil adaptarse a una nueva sociedad llegaron para reunirse con personas que estaban bien establecidas aquí. Para aquellos que llegan después de huir del peligro y la muerte, es posible que tengan pocos de los beneficios de los ayudantes a medida que llegan. Puede ser muy solitario y difícil.
Formar de nuestras parroquias comunidades de acogida para el extranjero comienza con enseñar a nuestras comunidades a honrar la fe y los sacrificios que hacen los migrantes e inmigrantes para entrar en una nueva sociedad. Honra su motivación para buscar un hogar en nuestras comunidades. Reconoce sus costumbres y tradiciones. Celebre sus logros, incluso los logros más humildes en su nuevo hogar. Una comunidad acogedora acoge a Cristo entre nosotros.

First Response to asylum seekers
Refugees and asylum seekers arrive at borders of nations around the world every day. There are nations of the world that appear to those fleeing desperation as a respite in their search for a place to call home for themselves and their families. The refugee believes that their homeland is not safe. They seek freedom and an opportunity to raise their families in peace. Many hope that they may return to their place of origin to reunite with loved ones, but now is not the time. They are unsure of where they are going and if they will be received in a new nation. Their numbers are so vast that ideally all nations of the world would cooperate in making room for them temporarily or even permanently. At this time, the refugees live in extreme conditions and struggle for survival.
There are generous people around the world working as First Responders to people in crisis. They man centers and shelters providing emergency assistance to refugees. The response is taken up in many faith communities offering food, shelter, medical care, legal assistance, and many social services. People around the world pray for the desperate people of the world. Often when seeing the multitude of people needing assistance, our First Responders recognize how many more people need help than we can serve. There is never an end to the needy.
Honestly, as a society we are pretty good at offering help in the moment of crisis, but it is after the person receives the food, clothing, medical attention, and receive some counsel on how to access help, that the stranger must find work, shelter and create a new home. The migrant seeks stability in a new environment, and it takes time before one feels at home. Moving from surviving the crisis of migration to establishing oneself in a parish, a neighborhood, a new country, takes time and help.
We need a ministry of Second Response for migrants. It is a path towards people becoming immigrants. Crossing a border is not enough to make a person an immigrant. Ask immigrants how long it took for them to feel at home in the United States. You will get a variety of answers. Some felt well received as they had friends and family members already here who helped them establish themselves. They are the lucky ones. Many of those who found it easy to adapt to a new society arrived to reunite with people who were well established here themselves. For those who are arriving after fleeing danger and death, they may have few of the benefits of helpers as they arrive. It can be very lonely and difficult.
Making our parishes communities of welcome for the stranger begins with teaching our communities to honor the faith and the sacrifices migrants and immigrants make to enter a new society. Honor their motivation to seek a home in our communities. Recognize their customs and traditions. Celebrate their accomplishments, even the lowliest accomplishments in their new home. A welcoming community welcomes Christ amongst us.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
