Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma
“¿Nadie te ha condenado?”
Hace siete semanas, vine a esta comunidad para ofrecerle a esta comunidad una “Misión por un Mundo Herido”. Sabemos que estos tiempos son difíciles. Esta no es la primera ni será la última vez que miramos al mundo y vemos sus heridas. Lo vemos en nuestra respuesta a la pandemia de COVID, en la política de nuestra nación, las guerras en el mundo, los problemas en las familias, las divisiones entre las iglesias e incluso la división dentro de la Iglesia. Nuestras lecturas para las Misas durante la Cuaresma a menudo nos hablan de los fariseos y líderes judíos que buscaban atrapar a Jesús en formas que justificarían matarlo.
El mensaje de Jesús ha estado constantemente ante nosotros, “No juzguen”, “Dejan de criticarlos unos a otros”, “Oren por los que lo hacen daño”, “Amen a sus enemigos”, y “Amen a su prójimo”. Hoy, la historia evangélica de la mujer sorprendida en adulterio nos muestra a Jesús dando paz a una persona herida y avergonzada públicamente por su pecado.
Cuando los fariseos lo confrontaron, condenando a la mujer sorprendida en adulterio, Jesús no los enfrentó en absoluto. Sabía que no estaban interesados en la misericordia y el amor de Dios. Dibujó en la arena. Seguían insistiendo en que respondiera. Cuando Jesús finalmente respondió, cambió el enfoque por completo. “Aquel de ustedes que no tenga pecado, que el tire la primera piedra”. Luego comenzó a escribir en la arena de nuevo. Después de que todos los acusadores se fueron, preguntó: “¿Nadie te ha condenado?” Ella respondió: “Nadie, señor”. Luego dijo: “Tampoco yo te condeno”.
El mensaje de Jesús es muy reconfortante cuando reconocemos nuestros pecados. Incluso aquellos que se fueron con las piedras en la mano, reconocieron su propia debilidad y pecado. La historia podría haber terminado con ellos alejándose, pero la que se alejó con verdadero alivio fue la mujer que pudo comenzar de nuevo después del perdón de los pecados.
El arte de dibujar en la arena
Cuando Jesús dibujó en la arena, cambió el enfoque de las preguntas de los fariseos. Mientras consideramos la sanación de un “Mundo Herido”, necesitamos aprender el arte de dibujar en la arena. Hace muchos años, recuerdo a un buen artista de arena. Nuestra parroquia tenía varios coros excelentes. Cada coro cantó dos veces al mes en las diferentes Misas. Uno de los coros estaba formado por jóvenes. Un domingo, había dos mujeres nuevas en el coro de jóvenes, eran músicos profesionales que tocaban en clubes nocturnos locales. Mencioné que me gustaría ir a uno de sus rendimientos. Me dijeron que no sería una buena idea que un sacerdote fuera a sus lugares.
El coro cantó frente a la congregación y cuando comenzó la misa, después de que los miembros del coro se quitaron los abrigos, supe que habría un gran revuelo después de la misa. Una de las jóvenes se vistió más apropiadamente para el club nocturno que para la iglesia. Después de la Misa, se sirvió el desayuno en el salón parroquial. Cuatro de las damas de la sociedad del altar me pidieron que me sentara con ellas. Dijeron: “Padre, tienes que decirles a esos jóvenes cómo vestirse para la iglesia”. Cada una de las cuatro mujeres expresó su opinión. Un hombre estaba en la mesa. Dijeron: “Bill, ¿qué te parece?” Él dijo: “Todos saben que tengo tres hijos. Ellos nunca vendrían a la iglesia sin estar vestidos con traje y corbata”. Hizo una pausa y luego dijo: “Pero ellos no vienen a misa. Me alegro de ver a estos jóvenes que quieren asistir a misa”.
Bill era un artista de dibujar en la arena. Cambió tanto el enfoque que ni siquiera tuve que responder. A medida que continuamos en el Camino de Cuaresma, caminando con Jesús hacia el Calvario, comencemos a practicar el arte de dibujar en la arena. Que dejemos de enfocarnos en los pecados y faltas de los demás y comencemos a agradecer a Dios por la presencia de aquellos que caminan con nosotros en nuestras iglesias, nuestros lugares de trabajo, nuestras escuelas y especialmente en nuestros hogares. Empieza a dibujar en la arena, es nuestro camino hacia la paz.

Fifth Sunday of Lent
“Has no one condemned you?”
Seven weeks ago, I came to this community to offer this community a “Mission for a Wounded World.” We know that we live in challenging times. This is not the first nor will it be the last time we look at the world and see its woundedness. We see it in our response to the COVID pandemic, in the politics of our nation, wars in the world, troubles in families, divisions between churches and even division within the Catholic faith. Our readings for Masses during the Lenten season often tell us of the Pharisees and Jewish leaders seeking to trap Jesus in ways that would justify killing Jesus.
Jesus’s message has been constantly before us, “Do not judge”, “Stop criticizing each other”, “Pray for those who hurt you”, “Love your enemies”, and “Love your neighbor.” Today, the gospel story of the woman caught in adultery, shows us Jesus bringing peace to a person wounded and embarrassed publicly for her sin.
When the Pharisees confronted him, condemning the woman caught in adultery, Jesus did not engage them at all. He knew that they were not interested in the mercy and love of God. He drew in the sand. They kept insisting that he respond. When Jesus finally did respond, he changed the focus entirely. “Let the one without sin cast the first stone.” He then began writing in the sand again. After all the accusers left, he asked, “Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.”Then he said, “Nor do I condemn you.”
The message of Jesus is greatly reassuring as we recognize our own sinfulness. Even those who walked away with the stones in their hands, recognized their own weakness and sin. The story could have ended with them walking away, but the one who walked away with real relief was the woman who could begin again after the forgiveness of sin.
The art of sand drawing
When Jesus drew in the sand, he changed the focus of the questions asked by the Pharisees. As we consider healing for a “Wounded World”, we need to learn the art of sand drawing. Many years ago, I recall a good sand artist. Our parish had several excellent choirs. Each choir sang twice a month at the different Masses. One of the choirs was made up of young adults. One Sunday, there were two new women in the youth choir, they were professional musicians who played in local nightclubs. I mentioned that I might like to go to one of their performances. I was told that it would not be a good idea for a priest to go to their venues.
The choir sang in front of the congregation and when the Mass began, after the choir members removed their coats, I knew that there would be a stir after Mass. One of the young ladies was dressed more appropriately for the night-club than for the church. After the Mass, breakfast was served in the parish hall. Four of the ladies of the altar society asked me to sit with them. They said, “Father, you need to tell those young people how to dress for church.” Each of the four women had their say. Another man was at our table. They said, “Bill, what do you think?” He said, “You all know that I have three sons. They would never come to church without being dressed in suit and tie.” He paused a moment and then said, “But they do not come to Mass. I am just glad to see these young people wanting to attend Mass.”
Bill was an artist drawing in the sand. He so changed the focus that I did not even have to respond. As we continue on our Lenten Journey, walking with Jesus to Calvary, let us begin to practice the art of sand drawing. May we take our focus off of the sins and faults of others and begin to thank God for the presence of those walking with us in our churches, our workplaces, our schools, and especially in our homes. Take up drawing in the sand, it is our path to peace.

Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
