(No sé qué día de nuestras celebraciones por la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe me afecta más. Obviamente, la celebración de la serenata del 11 de diciembre, las mañanitas al amanecer y la pompa del día mismo, con la misa y la fiesta del día 12 son destacadas, pero en mi meditación aprecio la fiesta de Juan Diego. La historia del Nican Mopohua muestra el carácter de Juan Diego madurando en la fe y en la dignidad. Es el hombre humilde, convirtiéndose en el testigo de un hombre que camina con una fe más de lo común. Lo siguiente repite el blog del año pasado de la fiesta de San Juan Diego.)
Hay poca información histórica sobre la vida de Juan Diego. En julio de 2002, la ceremonia de canonización involucró a participantes indígenas en todos los aspectos de la liturgia. En la homilía, el Papa Juan Pablo II se centró en Juan Diego como modelo de conversión indígena. Dijo: “Guadalupe y Juan Diego tienen un profundo significado eclesial y misionero y son un modelo de evangelización perfectamente inculturada. Al llamar a Juan Diego un modelo de conversión indígena a la fe católica, el Papa Juan Pablo II evitó la controversia sobre Juan Diego, llamando la atención” a la preocupación de la Iglesia por los pueblos indígenas del mundo.
El Nican Mopohua, el antiguo poema escrito en dialecto azteca presenta a Juan Diego como una conversión reciente al catolicismo. Su costumbre era asistir a las charlas de los Frailes en lo que hoy es la Ciudad de México. La leyenda de su vida es un apoyo a todo indígena que busca una relación con lo divino. En el Nican Mopohua se le presenta como un converso recién bautizado a la fe católica. Vio la mano de Dios en la Palabra de Dios proclamada por los frailes en México. En su bautismo tomó los nombres de dos apóstoles, Juan y Santiago.
También es un modelo para todos los conversos. Su educación en la fe comenzó antes de su bautismo, pero quería saber más sobre Jesús. Su costumbre era caminar a la Ciudad de México cada siete días para pasar tiempo asistiendo a las charlas de los frailes, asistir a misa y caminar nueve millas de regreso a su casa. Aprendió de Dios no solo por las enseñanzas de los frailes, sino también observando a Dios en la belleza de la naturaleza que lo rodeaba.
El Papa Juan Pablo II llamó la atención no solo sobre su deseo de aprender más sobre la fe, sino también sobre su celo por hacer la voluntad de Dios en su vida. Después de llevar el mensaje de la Virgen al obispo y experimentar los milagros en la casa del obispo, contó la historia a todos los que quisieron escuchar. Este humilde indígena se convirtió en catequista cuyo mensaje cautivó el corazón de muchos. El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo: “facilitó el fructífero encuentro de dos mundos y se convirtió en el catalizador de la nueva identidad mexicana, estrechamente unida a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, cuyo rostro mestizo expresa su maternidad espiritual que abraza a todos los mexicanos”. En 100 años, México se convirtió en la nación más católica del mundo.

Feast of St. Juan Diego
(I don’t know which day of our celebrations for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe affects me the most. Obviously, the celebration of the serenata on Dec. 11, the mañanitas at sunrise and the pageantry of the day itself, with the Mass and fiesta on the 12th are highlights, but in my meditation, I appreciate the feast of Juan Diego. The story of the Nican Mopohua shows the character of Juan Diego maturing in faith and dignity. He is the humble man, becoming the witness of a common man walking with an uncommon faith. The following repeats last year’s blog from the feast of St. Juan Diego.)
There is very little historical information about the life of Juan Diego. In July of 2002, the canonization ceremony involved indigenous participants in every aspect of the liturgy. In the homily, Pope John Paul II focused on Juan Diego as a model of indigenous conversion. He said, “Guadalupe and Juan Diego have a deep ecclesial and missionary meaning and are a model of perfectly inculturated evangelization. In calling Juan Diego a model of indigenous conversion to the Catholic faith, Pope John Paul II avoided controversy about Juan Diego, calling attention to the Church’s concern for the indigenous peoples of the world.
The Nican Mopohua, the ancient poem written in the Aztec dialect presents Juan Diego as a recent convert to Catholicism. His custom was to attend the talks of the Frailes in what is now Mexico City. The legend of his life is a support to every indigenous person seeking to have a relationship with the divine. In the Nican Mopohua he is introduced as a newly baptized convert to the Catholic faith. He saw the hand of God in the Word of God proclaimed by the friars in Mexico. At his baptism he took the names of two Apostles, John and James.
He is also a model for every convert. His education in the faith began prior to his Baptism, but he wanted to know more about Jesus. His custom was to walk to Mexico City every seven days to spend time attending the talks of the friars, attend Mass and walk nine miles back to his home. He learned of God not only from the teaching of the friars, but also by observing God in the beauty of nature around him.
Pope John Paul II called attention not only to his desire to learn more about the faith, but his zeal to do the will of God in his life. After taking the message of the Virgin to the Bishop and experiencing the miraculous events at the house of the Bishop, he told the story to everyone who would listen. This humble indigenous man became a catechist whose message captured the hearts of many. Pope John Paul II said: “he facilitated the fruitful meeting of two worlds and became the catalyst for the new Mexican identity, closely united to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose mestizo face expresses her spiritual motherhood which embraces all Mexicans.” Within 100 years, Mexico became the most Catholic nation on earth.
May all people see Juan Diego as Pope John Paul II saw him, “a model of perfectly inculturated evangelization.” ¡Que viva Juan Diego!
