La fe no es una carga
Jesús observó que los fariseos “hacen fardos muy pesados y difíciles de llevar, y los echan sobre las espaldas de los hombres”. (Mt. 23:4) Los Apóstoles reconocieron que la fe no debería ser una carga. Cuando enviaron a Pablo y Bernabé en misión a los gentiles, escribieron: “Fue el parecer del Espíritu Santo y el nuestro no imponerles ninguna carga”. (Hechos 15:28) Pablo dice que trabajó entre los tesalonicenses “de día y de noche, a fin de no ser una carga para nadie”. (1 Tes 2:9)
Los fariseos hacían de la fe una cuestión de seguir leyes y obligaciones. Sin embargo, para Jesús, la verdadera obligación de la fe viene de la misericordia, de la compasión, de ver a Jesús en los más abandonados. No fue el sábado lo que procupó a Jesús, sino dar la vista a los ciegos, el oído a los sordos, la salud al leproso, el perdón al pecador y la esperanza a los pobres. Es importante que nutrimos nuestra fe a través de la oración, el estudio y la liturgia. Pero la salvación llega a aquellos que se preocupan por el hambriento, el sediento, el desnudo, el extraño, el prisionero.
Cuando Jesús dijo a los Apóstoles que observaran las enseñanzas de los fariseos, pero que no siguieran su ejemplo, les estaba diciendo que tuvieran una fe basada en la compasión, el amor, el perdón y la humildad. Estos actos no son una carga, sino los actos que nos liberan para vivir en relación con Dios y con el prójimo.

Faith is not a burden
Jesus observed that the Pharisees “tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders.” (Mt. 23:3) The Apostles recognized that faith should not be a burden. When they sent Paul and Barnabas on mission to the Gentiles, they wrote, “It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden.” (Acts 15:28) Paul says that he worked among the Thessalonians “night and day in order not to burden any of you.” (1 Thes 2:9)
The Pharisees made faith a matter of following laws and obligations. Yet, for Jesus, the real obligation of faith comes in mercy, compassion, seeing Jesus in the most abandoned. It was not the sabbath that guided Jesus, but giving sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, health to the leper, forgiveness to the sinner and hope to the poor. It is important that we nurture our faith through prayer, study and liturgy. But, salvation comes to those who care for the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the prisoner.
When Jesus told the Apostles to observe the teaching of the Pharisees, but not to follow their example, he was telling them to have a faith based on compassion, love, forgiveness and humility. These acts are not a burden, but the acts that free us to live in relationship with God and with our neighbor.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers.
