The Faith of the Poor / La fe de los pobres

The Faith of the Poor
“The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith.” (EG. 200)
Pope Francis reflects my experience with the poor. Someone spoke about not being able to attend his regular Sunday Mass, so he went to a later Mass in Spanish. It was his first time at a Spanish Mass. He was impressed by the music and the reverence that he experienced at that Mass. He commented on how much he enjoyed the Mass while not understanding the language. He was impressed by the youth of the community and the number of children.
We need to recognize the faith of the immigrants in our communities. Those who have chosen to emigrate, place their trust in God. I wish that instead of considering our nation’s problems with immigration, people consider the faith of the poor. Pope Francis recognition of the openness of the poor to faith is not just a recognition of the poor today, but it was true of many of our ancestors who came to this country. Let us honor the faith of the poor.
