Expectativas: Los Presos
Probablemente no haya personas que tengan expectativas más bajas que los presos. Al participar en capacitaciones como voluntarios en el ministerio a los presos, hay constantes advertencias de no confiar y no creer a los presos. He realizado capacitaciones voluntarias para capellanes de prisiones en tres estados. Constantemente se nos advierte que los presos tratan a manipular a los voluntarios para ganar algo. No debíamos darles ninguna información personal, ni direcciones, ni números de teléfono.
En una prisión, uno encarcelado vino a nuestras celebraciones de Misa. Cada vez pedía literatura. A menudo teníamos folletos para dar a los reclusos. El capellán regular nos dijo que lo ignoráramos, diciendo que él solo iba a Misa para salir de su celda. Además de ir a misa católica, participó en servicios religiosos de los testigos de Jehová, servicios evangélicos y servicios musulmanes. Un día dijo que quería ser católico. Empezamos a darle una presentación modificada de RICA para su escenario. Profesó su fe, recibió la Confirmación y la Eucaristía. Durante los siguientes dos años, creció en su compromiso, invitando a otros presos que fueron bautizados católicos pero que no habían recibido otros sacramentos de iniciación. Trajo a más de cuarenta compañeros para recibir los sacramentos durante los próximos dos años.
Lo trasladaron al “campo de bomberos”. Los presos se convirtieron en bomberos forestales en California. Mientras estaba en el campamento de bomberos, escribió una carta a mí y a los sacerdotes de nuestra comunidad. Él escribió: “Usted y sus compañeros sacerdotes me trajeron la Sagrada Eucaristía semanalmente y en este tiempo desde entonces, Dios me ha estado remodelando, esculpiéndome para convertirme en una mejor persona, enseñándome lentamente a ser más como Jesús. Y por el resto de mi vida, puedo contar con que nuestro Padre estará allí para mí”.
Continuó agradeciéndonos por estar allí para él e invitándolo a realizar expectativas más altas. Nos maravillamos con su carta, agradecidos de tener uno de los hombres con los que rezábamos una vez a la semana dando tal testimonio. Que reconozcamos que con nuestro apoyo, algunos de los más abandonados pueden superar las bajas expectativas que ponemos en ellos.

Expectations: Prisoners
There are probably no people who have lower expectations than prisoners. When participating in training as volunteers in prison ministry, there are constant warnings to no trust and to not believe prisoners. I have been through volunteer training for prison chaplains in three states. We are constantly warned that the prisoners will work the volunteers for some benefit. We were not to give them any personal information, no addresses or phone numbers.
At one prison, one inmate came to our celebrations of Mass. Every time he asked for literature. We often had pamphlets to give inmates. The regular chaplain told us to ignore him, saying that he only went to Mass to get out of his cell. Along with going to Catholic Mass, he participated in religious services of Jehovah Witness, Evangelical services, and Muslim services. One day he said that he wanted to be Catholic. We began giving him a modified presentation of RCIA for his setting. He professed his faith, received Confirmation and Eucharist. For the next two years, he grew in his commitment, inviting other prisoners who were baptized Catholic but had not received other sacraments of initiation. He brought over forty inmates to receive sacraments over the next two years.
He was moved to a different prison, and went to “fire camp”. Prisoners became forest fire fighters in California. While in fire camp he wrote a letter to the priests of our community. He wrote: “You and your fellow priests brought the Holy Eucharist to me weekly and in this time since then, God has been reshaping me, sculpting me into a better person, slowly teaching me to be more like Jesus. And for the rest of my life, I can count on our Father being there for me.”
He went on thanking each of us for being there for him and inviting him to live up to higher expectations. Each of us priests marveled at his letter, grateful to have one of the men we prayed with once a week giving such a testimony. May we recognize that with our support some of the most abandoned among us may greatly exceed the low expectations that we place on them.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
