Expectativas y hacer ajustes

Expectations and making adjustments

This past week, we have considered expectations that others place on certain people or groups of people. It is difficult trying to live up to another person’s expectations, especially if our personal expectations are not in line with someone judging us or even trying to help us. There are times when our expectations may be interrupted by unforeseen circumstances or by actions of others. We need to learn how to make the most of the unexpected in our lives.

I always loved sports, but it was in soccer and hockey that I took on some lifelong characteristics. In soccer, there are eleven players on a team. We practiced the skills of dribbling the ball, trapping it, controlling it, passing and shooting. No matter how much we excelled in each of these skills, when the game was on, you repeated plays that you practiced, but you had to respond to any changing circumstance. An opponent changed direction of the ball, the pass was a little to the right or the left, too short or too long. When the pass was accurate, it was easy to receive and move forward, but when not so accurate, the great player adjusts to unexpected. After many years of playing soccer, I realize that reacting and responding to the unexpected happens in many of life’s best moments.

As I look back on fifty years of ministry, I realize that my most memorable moments took place when I had to respond to the unexpected. Sometimes, even in the most trying moments, there is grace, hope, love and joy. On these blogs, I have told stories of some people who touched my life because they responded with extraordinary grace in difficult moments of life. May all cherish the resilience of people who meet the challenges of poverty, tragedy and abuse with grace and hope.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
