Animar a los fieles
“Que anuncies la palabra; insiste a tiempo y a destiempo; convence, reprende y exhorta con toda paciencia y sabiduría.”(2 Tm: 4,2)
El domingo, la segunda lectura fue de la instrucción de San Pablo a Timoteo. Pablo era un viejo misionero que daba consejos a su joven discípulo. Le dijo a Timoteo, “anuncie la palabra” en todo momento. Decía, “convence, reprende, y exhorta con toda paciencia y sabiduría”. Hay un gran equilibrio en el consejo de Pablo. Desafortunadamente, algunos predicadores reprenden a menudo y hacen poco para animar a los fieles. Recordemos que Pablo no sólo quería que el predicador convenciera y reprendiera, sino también que “exhortara con toda paciencia y sabiduría”.
Había una parroquia en la diócesis de Fresno sin sacerdote. El pastor necesitó ayuda al principio por una enfermedad y luego se jubiló. Durante diez meses, algunos sacerdotes ayudaron a la parroquia los fines de semana para las misas. Celebré misas en esa parroquia unas diez veces. El Decano de esa región se reunió con el pueblo antes de asignar un nuevo párroco. Una mujer mexicana dijo: “¿Por qué no nos puede enviar al p. Miguel?” El Decano preguntó: “¿Por qué quiere el Padre Miguel?” Ella respondió: “Fr. Miguel es estadounidense. No solo aprendió nuestro idioma, también estudió nuestra historia y ama nuestras prácticas religiosas y fiestas. Cuando explica la historia de la conversión en México, salimos de Misa orgullosos de ser católicos”. Ella continuó: “Desafortunadamente, otros predicadores nos regañan y salimos tristes. Por favor, envíenos al p. Miguel.”
Vivimos en tiempos difíciles. Malas noticias y políticos enojados quieren dividirnos. La Palabra de Dios es “buena nueva”. Ciertamente, hay momentos en los que necesitamos corrección, pero hoy, la gente necesita escuchar la buena nueva. Si escuchamos sobre los desafíos que nos rodean, debemos prestar atención, pero también buscamos brindar consuelo, consejo y esperanza a aquellos con quienes nos encontramos. Como dice el viejo refrán: “Si la vida te da limones, haz limonada”. Por supuesto, el mejor dicho proviene del Papa Pablo VI: “Si quieres la paz, trabaja por la justicia”. Que podamos proclamar la “buena nueva”.

“Proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.” (2 Tm: 4,2)
On Sunday, the second reading was from St. Paul’s instruction to Timothy. Paul was an old missionary giving advice to his young disciple. He told Timothy, “proclaim the word” at all times. He was to “convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.” There is great balance in Paul’s advice. Unfortunately, some preachers reprimand often and do little to encourage the faithful. Let us remember that Paul not only wanted the preacher to convince and reprimand, but also to “encourage through all patience and teaching.”
There was a parish in the diocese of Fresno with no priest. The pastor needed help at first because of illness, and later he retired. For ten months a few priests helped the parish on weekends for Masses. I celebrated Masses in that parish about ten times. The Dean of that region met with the people before assigning a new pastor. One Mexican woman said, “Why can’t you send us Fr. Mike?” The Dean asked, “Why do you want Fr. Mike?” She replied, “Fr. Mike is an American. Not only did he learn our language, he also studied our history and loves our religious practices and feasts. When he explains the story of conversion in Mexico, we leave Mass, proud to be Catholic.” She continued, “Unfortunately other preachers reprimand us, and we leave sad. Please, send us Fr. Mike.”
We live in harsh times. Bad news and angry politicians seek to divide us. The Word of God is “good news”. Certainly, there are times when we need correction, but today, people need to hear the good news. If we hear of the challenges around us, we need to take heed, but we also seek to bring comfort, healing and hope to those whom we meet. As the old saying goes, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Of course, the better saying comes from Pope Paul VI, “If you want peace, work for justice.” May we proclaim the “good news”.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
