¿Buscamos Unidad en la Diversidad?
“Dando la Bienvenida al Extraño entre Nosotros: Unidad en la Diversidad” (USCCB 2000), comienza:
“Unidad en la diversidad es la visión que nosotros, los obispos, como pastores de la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos, ofrecemos a nuestro pueblo al recibir a los nuevos inmigrantes y refugiados que llegan a nuestras costas”.
Veintitrés años después de este documento, preguntémonos ¿hasta qué punto los extraños ven a la Iglesia como signo de “unidad en la diversidad”? Al momento de escribir este artículo, los obispos estadounidenses admitieron que los inmigrantes recientes no siempre son bien recibidos en la Iglesia. Independientemente del progreso que hayamos logrado, reconocemos que la “visión” todavía está frente a nosotros. Todavía tenemos un largo camino por recorrer. No debemos engañarnos a nosotros mismos cediendo a la tentación de actuar como si no hubiera divisiones dentro de nuestra iglesia. Los obispos reconocieron que crear unidad en la diversidad no estaría sin desafíos.
“Tenemos el desafío de ir más allá de las comunidades étnicas que viven juntas dentro de nuestras propias parroquias sin ninguna conexión entre nosotros. Tenemos el desafío de convertirnos en una Iglesia evangelizadora abierta al diálogo interreligioso y dispuesta a anunciar el Evangelio a quienes deseen escucharlo. Los nuevos inmigrantes nos llaman a la mayoría de nosotros a nuestra herencia ancestral como descendientes de inmigrantes y a nuestra herencia bautismal como miembros del cuerpo de Cristo. ‘Hemos sido bautizados en el único Espíritu para que formáramos un solo cuerpo, ya fuéramos judíos o griegos, esclavos o libres. Y todos hemos bebido del único Espíritu.'” (1 Cor 12, 13).
Quizás la lentitud de nuestro progreso en la buena acogida de inmigrantes y refugiados sea nuestra falta de unidad en la Iglesia de hoy. En las últimas semanas, las segundas lecturas de nuestras liturgias dominicales provinieron de la primera carta de Pablo a los Corintios. Había divisiones en la comunidad de la iglesia de Corinto. Unos eran para Pablo, otros para Apolos y otros para Cefas. La división en la Iglesia no es nueva. Hoy tenemos los para Juan Pablo II, otros para Benedicto y otros para Francisco. Gastamos más energía criticando a los demás que buscando la unidad. Nuestras liturgias son incómodas ya que algunos quieren devociones que reflejen la piedad de los recuerdos de tiempo pasado, otros quieren formas de oración más modernas y otros simplemente buscan la paz en los difíciles desafíos que enfrentan en sus hogares y comunidades.
Para acoger al extranjero entre nosotros, escucha a Pablo:
“Así pues, que nadie se gloríe de pertenecer a ningún hombre, ya que todo les pertenece a ustedes: Pablo, Apolo y Pedro, el mundo, la vida y la muerte, lo presente y lo futuro: todo es de ustedes; ustedes son de Cristo, y Cristo es de Dios.” (1Cor. 3:21-23)

“Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity” (USCCB 2000), begins:
“Unity in diversity is the vision that we bishops, as pastors of the Church in the United States, offer to our people as they welcome the new immigrants and refugees who come to our shores.”
Twenty-three years after this document, let us ask how well strangers see the Church as a sign of “unity in diversity”? At the time of writing, the U.S. bishops admitted that recent immigrants are not always well received in the Church. Whatever progress we have made, we recognize that the “vision” is still in front of us. We still have a long way to go. We need not deceive ourselves by giving in to the temptation of acting as though there are no divisions within our church. The bishops recognized that creating unity is diversity would not be without challenges.
“We are challenged to get beyond ethnic communities living side by side within our own parishes without any connection with each other. We are challenged to become an evangelizing Church open to interreligious dialogue and willing to proclaim the Gospel to those who wish to hear it. The new immigrants call most of us back to our ancestral heritage as descendants of immigrants and to our baptismal heritage as members of the body of Christ. ‘For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we are all given to drink of one Spirit'” (1 Cor 12:13).
Perhaps the slowness of our progress in receiving immigrants and refugees well is our lack of unity in the Church today. Over the past few weeks, the second readings of our Sunday liturgies came from Paul´s first letter to the Corinthians. There were divisions in the church community of Corinth. Some were for Paul, others for Apollos, and other for Cephas. Division in the Church is not new. Today, we have those for John Paul II, for Benedict, and for Francis. We spend more energy criticizing others than seeking unity. Our liturgies are uncomfortable as some want devotions that reflect a piety of memories of the ‘good old days’, others want forms of prayer that are more modern, and others simply seek peace in the difficult challenges they face in their homes and communities.
To welcome the stranger amongst us, listen to Paul:
“So, let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you, Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or the present or the future: all belong to you, and you to Christ, and Christ to God.” (1Cor. 3:21-23)

Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
