Haz más que los mandamientos
Sirac dijo que si eliges observar los Mandamientos, serás salvo. Jesús no dice nada para disminuir la importancia de los Mandamientos y la enseñanza del Antiguo Testamento, pero nos pide más que la observancia de los mandamientos. No es sólo, “No matarás”. Él dice que dejes de lado la ira, que no guardes resentimientos, que perdones e incluso que ames a tu enemigo. Evitar el adulterio es bueno, pero el matrimonio es más que no cometer adulterio. Hay mucho más en dos personas que se convierten en una sola mente, un solo corazón y una sola alma. La oración no es sólo una serie de oraciones piadosas, sino una conversación con Dios. “Padre nuestro” es una conversación íntima con nuestro Dios. Confía en el amor paternal de Dios por nosotros.
En lugar de considerar los Mandamientos como límites a la libertad de los fieles, considéralos como el comienzo del caminar con Dios. El mensaje de Jesús no es simplemente “evitar el pecado”. Nos invita a una vida más completa en la unión con Dios y entre nosotros. Los mandamientos son sólo un primer paso en el camino de la salvación.
Necesitamos considerar lo que Jesús dijo de “cumplir” los mandamientos. Los mandamientos solos no son suficientes para la salvación. Necesitamos aspirar a más que a los mandamientos. La clave es que tenemos que aprender a amar. A medida que Jesús se acercaba a su tiempo para completar nuestra salvación, dio un nuevo mandamiento: “Ámense unos a otros como yo los he amado”. Esto es cumplir los mandamientos.

Do more than the Commandments
Sirach said that if you choose to observe the Commandments, you will be saved. Jesus says nothing to diminish the importance of the Commandments and the teaching of the Old Testament, but he asks more of us than observance of the commandments. It is not only, “You shall not kill.” He says to put aside anger, hold no resentments, forgive and even love your enemy. Avoiding adultery is good, but there is more to marriage than not committing adultery. There is so much more in two people becoming of one mind, one heart and one soul. Prayer is not only a series of pious prayers, but an intimate talking with God. “Our Father” is an intimate conversation with our God. It is confident in God’s paternal love for us.
Instead of considering the Commandments as limits to the freedom of the faithful, consider them as the beginning of walking with God. The message of Jesus is not simply to “avoid sin”. He invites us to a more complete life if union with God and with one another. The commandments are only a first step on the way to salvation.
We need to consider what Jesus meant to “fulfill” the commandments. The commandments alone are not enough for salvation. We need to aspire to more than the commandments. The key is that we need to learn how to love. As Jesus approached his time to complete our salvation, he gave a new commandment, “Love one another as I have loved you.” This is fulfilling the commandments.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
