Disillusioned Catholics

One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. (EG. 85)

This summer has been a great blessing as I have celebrated my fiftieth anniversary as a priest. I have visited with family members, friends from my childhood, people from my years of study in the seminary, people who have been part of my ministries over the years. Almost all of whom are Catholic. Unfortunately, some have had difficult experiences within the Catholic church. Some even declare that they have left the Church. I have really enjoyed getting reacquainted with everyone I have seen this summer.

Since the context of many of my meetings with people is to reflect on my fifty years as a priest, it is looking to the past. I have heard many people reflecting on hurts, disappointments, harsh experiences with religious role models, personal slights experienced with poor preaching and rigid pastoral practices. How to deal with past hurts is not easy. The way to peace is not to fight back. We must find another way to deal with hurt. If you want to really tick off someone who offends you, forgive them.

The television program, Ted Lasso does a good job of addressing forgiveness. I was impressed by the theme of forgiveness recurring in many of its episodes. As I watched the programs, I recognized the lesson of Pope John Paul II in his New Year Message in 2002. It was only a few months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He said, “There is no peace without justice and there is no justice without forgiveness.”

I love to remember our success stories, and our joyful memories from our youth. I do not need the stories of shame, hurt and failure. We need to learn to forgive, so that we can be better. We need not find our joy in being forgiven by others as much as that we need to simply forgive. Pope John Paul II did not just speak those words. He demonstrated that forgiveness when one of his first public acts after he recovered from an assassination attempt on his life was to go to the prison to forgive the man who shot him. May we learn to forgive others, no matter what they have done.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
