Si se puede
Ayer expresé mi preocupación por los católicos desilusionados. Los he encontrado en mi generación, especialmente entre católicos más educados en la fe. A los padres les preocupa que algunos, incluso todos sus hijos, se hayan alejado de la fe católica. Algunos se han sentido alejados de la fe por las críticas que escuchan desde los púlpitos. Algunos sienten que la iglesia que una vez los animaron no está presente en lo que ven y escuchan en las iglesias hoy. Las frustraciones son expresadas tanto por católicos conservadores como progresistas. No entienden ni encuentran formas de superar las divisiones que ven en las iglesias y en sus familias.
Padres de adolescentes y adultos jóvenes se desalientan cuando sus hijos pelean con ellos por ir a la iglesia. Algunos jóvenes encuentran esperanza en una iglesia que mira al pasado en busca de respuestas y formas de devoción. Otros no se sienten atraídos por la pompa y la estructura de la expresión religiosa de hoy. Las personas que quieren ayudar a los demás y promover actividades para los jóvenes enfrentan obstáculos para brindar un ministerio juvenil debido a las protecciones contra los pecados de negligencia de algunos líderes religiosos.
Los niños ingresan a la preparación para los sacramentos en programas que parecen no tener fin. Las clases son más juegos y actividades que experiencias de formación religiosa.
Jesús les decía a menudo a sus discípulos: “No teman”. No dejes que tus decepciones te impidan creer. La buena noticia de mis años de sacerdote es la resiliencia de los pobres. En México, se encuentra en la frase, “Sí se puede”. En los Estados Unidos es parte de nuestro orgullo nacional como la actitud de “can do” (se puede) de los patriotas que lucharon por la independencia estadounidense o los pioneros que migraron hacia el oeste a lo largo de los senderos de Oregón y Santa Fe, y los inmigrantes que trabajaron en los ferrocarriles para expandir esta nación, y aquellos que defendió a nuestra nación en tiempos de guerra.
Jesús no vino a condenar al mundo, sino a que el mundo sea salvo. No importa el idioma, sigamos adelante. No olviden la esperanza, la fe y la confianza de nuestros fieles antepasados. Sí se puede.

Sí se puede, Yes we can
Yesterday, I expressed my concern for disillusioned Catholics. I have met them in my generation, especially among Catholics educated in the faith. Parents are concerned that some even all of their children have walked away from the Catholic faith. Some have felt pushed away from the faith by criticisms they hear from pulpits. Some feel that the church that once animated them is not present in what they see and hear in our churches today. The frustrations are expressed by both conservative and progressive oriented Catholics. They do not understand or find ways to overcome the divisions that they see in churches and in their families.
Parents of adolescents and young adults are discouraged as their children fight with them about going to church. Some young people find hope in a church that looks to the past for answers and forms of devotion. Others have no attraction to the pomp and structure of religious expression today. People who want to help others and to promote activities for youth experience barriers to providing youth ministry because of protections against the sins of neglect of some religious leaders.
Children enter preparation for sacraments in programs that seem to have no end. Classes are more games and activities than experiences of religious formation.
Jesus often told his disciples, “Do not be afraid.” Don´t let your disappointments keep you from believing. The good news of my years as a priest is the resilience of the poor. In Mexico, it is found in the phrase, “Sí se puede” “Yes we can”. In the United States it is part of our national pride as the “can do” attitude of patriots who fought for American independence or pioneers moving west along the Oregon, and Santa Fe trails, and immigrants working on railroads to expand this nation, and those who defended our nation in times of war.
Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but that the world may be saved. Whatever language we speak, let us move forward. Do not forget the hope, the faith and the confidence of our faithful ancestors. Yes we can.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
