Desarrollar la virtud: La Misericordia
Pedro preguntó: “¿Cuántas veces debo perdonar a mi hermano?” La virtud del perdón es uno de los temas más consistentes en el Evangelio de Jesús. El arrepentimiento es el mensaje de los profetas y de Juan el Bautista, pero en la vida de Jesús encontramos la misericordia de Dios. El evangelio de Juan dice que Jesús vino al mundo, no para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo se salve (Jn 3, 17). Muchas veces, antes de sanar o evangelizar a alguien, Jesús perdonó el pecado y llamó la atención sobre la misericordia de Dios. Mostró la misericordia de Dios en la curación de los paralíticos (Mc 2,5) (Mt 9,5) y (Lc 5,23), la mujer que lava los pies de Jesús (Lc 7,48), la historia de la mujer atrapada en el adulterio, la parábola del Hijo Pródigo, y Jesús perdonando a los que lo crucificaron, “Padre, perdónalos…” Nos enseña a perdonar como el Padre nos perdona en el Padre Nuestro.
El desafío para nosotros es ver la misericordia en nuestro tiempo. Podemos hablar de misericordia, pero darnos la vuelta y juzgar a los demás, condenar a ciertos grupos de personas, humillar a algunas de las personas más vulnerables del mundo. No logramos denunciar a la gente por su inconsistencia. Se puede condenar el aborto, pero no encontrar ningún problema en la pena de muerte. Otro puede buscar justicia para los derechos humanos de las personas que sufren discriminación racial y su identidad sexual y considerar el aborto como un derecho.
A nuestro mundo le resulta muy difícil aceptar que una familia cuyo familiar ha sido asesinado alegue que el asesino de su ser querido no reciba la pena de muerte. Cuando estaba en Mississippi, dos mujeres religiosas que dirigían una clínica y un centro de servicios sociales fueron brutalmente asesinadas. Sus dos congregaciones religiosas convencieron al estado de no solicitar la pena de muerte para el asesino. Las Congregaciones dieron testimonio de la misericordia de nuestra fe.
Cuando César Chávez ayunó, lo hizo para poner fin a la violencia, no sólo contra quienes dañan a sus defensores sindicales, sino para que sus propios seguidores no tomen venganza. El Papa Juan Pablo II sorprendió a muchos cuando visitó a su asesino y le dijo: “para perdonarlo”. Y tres meses después del 11 de septiembre, el mensaje del Papa fue: “No hay paz sin justicia, no hay justicia sin perdón”.

Peter asked: “How often must I forgive my brother?” The virtue of forgiveness is one of the most consistent themes in the Gospel of Jesus. Repentance is the message of the prophets and John the Baptist, but in the life of Jesus we encounter the mercy of God. The gospel of John says that Jesus came into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world would be saved, (Jn 3: 17). Many times, before healing or evangelizing someone Jesus forgave sin and called attention to the mercy of God. He showed God’s mercy in the healing of paralytics (Mk 2:5) (Mt. 9:5) and (Lk 5:23), the woman washing Jesus’ feet (Lk 7:48), the story of the woman caught in adultery, the parable of the Prodigal Son, and Jesus forgiving those crucifying him, “Father, forgive them…” He teaches us to forgive as the Father forgives us in the Our Father.
The challenge for us is to see mercy in our time. We may speak of mercy, but turn around and judge others, condemn certain groups of people, humiliate some of the most vulnerable people in the world. We fail to call out people for their inconsistency. One may condemn abortion, but find no problem in the death penalty. Another may seek justice for human rights for people suffering racial and gender discrimination and support abortion as a right.
Our world finds it very hard to accept when a family whose family member has been murdered pleads that the murderer of their loved one does not receive the death penalty. When I was in Mississippi, two religious women who ran a clinic and social service center were brutally murdered. Both of their religious congregations convinced the state to not seek the death penalty for the murderer. The Congregations gave witness to the mercy of our faith.
When Cesar Chavez fasted, he did so for the end of violence, not only against those harming his union advocates, but that there be no vengeance taken by his own followers. Pope John Paul II surprised many when he visited his assassin as he said, “to forgive him.” And three months after 9/11, the Pope’s message was, “No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers.
