Desarrollar la virtud: fervor y la audacia
¿Cómo debemos desarrollar la virtud en tiempos de división? Vivimos en una época de mucha infelicidad. Hay cuestiones que desafían a los líderes políticos locales, nacionales e internacionales. La migración de personas hoy en día, los tiroteos masivos, la violencia doméstica, la tensión racial, la violencia, las cuestiones de dignidad humana, las divisiones religiosas y el estrés económico son factores que contribuyen a una infelicidad general que nos rodea. Esta infelicidad no se da sólo en Estados Unidos, sino en todo el mundo.
La exhortación apostólica La alegría del Evangelio, Evangelii Gaudium, aborda la infelicidad que nos rodea, especialmente dentro de la Iglesia. La alegría a la que nos llama el Papa Francisco no es una alegría superficial, sino resultado de la fe. No es la felicidad de un niño que recibe un regalo de Navidad envuelto debajo de un árbol, sino la satisfacción de una vida virtuosa. Es virtud motivada por la fe en un Dios amoroso. No se basa en el miedo o la vergüenza.
¿Cuál es tu imagen de una persona de fe? ¿Es una persona de rostro severo cuya austeridad de vida no refleja la alegría del Evangelio? El Papa Francisco nos advierte: “Una de las tentaciones más serias que ahogan el fervor y la audacia es la conciencia de derrota que nos convierte en pesimistas quejosos y desencantados con cara de vinagre. (EG. 85)
Necesitamos resistirnos a elegir lo que nos gusta o no nos gusta en las enseñanzas de nuestros Papas más recientes. Una persona que se opone constantemente a las enseñanzas del Papa Francisco criticó al Papa por decir en Evangelii Gaudium: La Iglesia no crece por el proselitismo, sino “por atracción”.[13] (EG. 15) El autor se sintió ofendido por la declaración del Papa Francisco, pero tenga en cuenta que hay una nota que refiere a la siguiente declaración del Papa Benedicto XVI en una homilía predicada a la Conferencia Episcopal de América Latina (CELAM) en 2007: “La Iglesia no hace proselitismo. Crece mucho más por “atracción”.
La audacia y el celo son virtudes que responden al gozo de la salvación dado por Cristo.

Developing Virtue: Boldness and Zeal
How are we to develop virtue in a time of division? We live in a time of a great deal of unhappiness. There are issues that challenge local, national and international political leaders. The migration of people today, mass shootings, domestic violence, racial tension, violence, issues of human dignity, religious divisions and economic stress are contributing factors to a general unhappiness around us. This unhappiness is not only in the United States, but around the world.
The Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, Evangelii Gaudium, addresses the unhappiness around us and especially within the Church. The joy that Pope Francis calls us to is not a superficial joy, but the result of faith. It is not the happiness of a child receiving a Christmas gift wrapped under a tree, but the satisfaction of a virtuous life. It is virtue that is motivated by faith in a loving God. It is not based on fear or shame.
What is your image of a person of faith? Is it a stern-faced person whose austerity of life does not reflect the Joy of the Gospel? Pope Francis warns us: “One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. (EG. 84)
We need to resist picking and choosing what we like or dislike in the teaching of our most recent Popes. A person who is consistently opposing teaching of Pope Francis took the Pope to task for saying in Evangelii Gaudium, It is not by proselytizing that the Church grows, but “by attraction”.[13] (EG. 15) The author was offended by Pope Francis statement, but please note that there is a footnote attached to the statement. The footnote refers to the following statement from Pope Benedict XVI in a homily delivered to the Episcopal Conference of the Latin America (CELAM) in 2007:“The Church does not engage in proselytism. Instead, she grows by “attraction”.
Boldness and Zeal are virtues that respond to the Joy of Salvation given by Christ.
