Culture is healthy / La cultura es saludable

Culture is healthy / La cultura es saludable

padremigrante February 15, 2022 Ministry

(Consideration of the culture of people of any nation, faith or group begins with recognition of good in people. It is the presence of God within the community considered. John tells us what a culture of faith is as he tells us that “God is love”. [1 Jn. 4:7-21])

Culture is healthy

My friend is a Marine. He is a good man, known for loyalty and consideration. He loves his family, all his former classmates and the playmates of his youth. He is constant in his faith, ushering and greeting people at his church. He is especially considerate of those with disabilities of any kind. He is generous beyond his family and his church. He will boast about his family, his friends, his church and his country, but not boast of his own accomplishments. He supports every veteran whoever served his or her country, but especially a Marine, “Once a Marine, always a Marine, Semper Fi.” This is Marine culture.

My friend is also known to have a few too many beers, and he has been in several fights. It would be an error to consider his defects as his culture. As a Catholic, he has often confessed his failures of living up to his codes of his faith and the Marines. His culture is not afraid to admit his embarrassment at weakness, but confidence that his virtue will always shine.

Healthy Culture reveals character

Recently, Redemptorists identify our mission as: “Called to be missionaries for a Wounded World.” In considering woundedness in the world, we may be tempted to immediately focus on the ills of the world around us and fail to recognize the resiliency and goodness of people in our midst. I overuse what a fellow Redemptorist told me when I began studying Spanish for an example, but let me remember once again the advice I recall every day as I work with Hispanic people. “I hope that you are not one of those who thinks that once you learn Spanish you know all that you need to know to work with Latinos. you need to know the customs, the faith, and the struggles of my people. If you will not walk with my people, don’t bother to learn Spanish.”

To walk with “my people” meant walking with migrants and immigrants, respecting their hopes, their values, their faith and their seeking a better life for themselves and their family. In walking with migrants, we can recover the hopes, values and faith of our ancestors.

We can minister to a “wounded world.” We do so be recognizing and celebrating our healthy culture. Like my Marine friend, recognizing his own defects, confessing them and recognizing that he is more than his weaknesses, we can rise above our prejudices, our pettiness, our gossip and our stubbornness. Our weaknesses are not our culture, but they limit our witness to a loving God. God is Love.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
