Cristo Rey, fiesta para nuestro tiempo
El próximo domingo es la fiesta de Cristo Rey. La fiesta se estableció con la promulgación de Quas Primas, la séptima encíclica del Papa Pío XI en 1925. Al principio, escribe que la fiesta es una respuesta a “las dificultades que atraviesa la humanidad”. (QP. 1) La realeza se declara como real, pero a diferencia de los reinos de la tierra. Después de aclarar el significado de la realeza de Cristo, aborda dos de las dificultades por las que la humanidad está luchando, el nacionalismo y el secularismo:
Nacionalismo: “hoy a lamentar, al ver el germen de la discordia sembrado por todas partes; encendidos entre los pueblos los odios y rivalidades que tanto retardan, todavía, el restablecimiento de la paz; las codicias desenfrenadas, que con frecuencia se esconden bajo las apariencias del bien público y del amor patrio” (QP. 24)
Secularismo: lamentamos “ junto con un ciego y desatado egoísmo, sólo atento a sus particulares provechos y comodidades y midiéndolo todo por ellas; destruida de raíz la paz doméstica por el olvido y la relajación de los deberes familiares; rota la unión y la estabilidad de las familias; y, en fin, sacudida y empujada a la muerte la humana sociedad.“. (QP. 24).
El Papa Pío XI ofreció a la Iglesia, la Fiesta de Cristo Rey para responder al Nacionalismo y al Secularismo en base a los desafíos enfrentados en Europa y Norteamérica en 1925. En ambos ismos estaban extremadamente centrados en el ego. Había poca humildad, generosidad, compasión y unidad en los movimientos nacionalistas o secularistas. El reino de Cristo se centra en el amor a Dios y al prójimo. En muchos países del mundo hubo un creciente anticlericalismo que desafió a los líderes religiosos y amenazó a los líderes religiosos con violencia.
Hoy también lamentamos las enemistades y rivalidades entre grupos, razas, partidos políticos, naciones e incluso entre líderes religiosos. Hay un tribalismo que crea una sociedad de “nosotros contra ellos”. A medida que pasa el tiempo, las divisiones aparecen cada vez más arraigadas, con poca preocupación por vivir juntos en paz. Muchos ven la división como “derecha versus izquierda”, “demócrata versus republicano”, “conservador versus liberal”, pero en cada caso hay un egoísmo que busca su propia comodidad y ventaja. La unidad y la estabilidad de la familia se ven sacudidas y la sociedad está en peligro.
El camino de Cristo no es de derecha ni de izquierda, ni conservador ni liberal. No es una forma intermedia ni una forma de transigencia. Es una forma diferente que no se basa en las necesidades individuales. La gran imagen del camino diferente está en el evangelio de Mateo, capítulo 25. Es el camino que acepta la responsabilidad de amar al prójimo. “Cuando tuve hambre …..” Cuando el Papa Pío XI estableció la fiesta de Cristo Rey, la celebración de la fiesta captó la imaginación de muchos cuyas vidas pronto fueron desafiadas por la agitación política en muchas naciones y la inminente experiencia de Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Christ the King, a feast for our time
Next Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King. The feast was established at the promulgation of Quas Primas, the seventh encyclical of Pope Pius XI in 1925. At the very beginning, he writes that the Feast is a response to “the difficulties under which mankind was laboring”. (QP. 1) The kingship is declared as real, but unlike the kingdoms of earth. After clarifying the meaning of the kingship of Christ, he addresses two of the difficulties under which mankind is laboring, nationalism and secularism:
Nationalism: “we lament …. those bitter enmities and rivalries between nations, which hinder the cause of peace; that insatiable greed which is so often hidden under a pretense of public spirit and patriotism, and gives rise to so many private quarrels.” (QP. 24)
Secularism: we lament “a blind and immoderate selfishness, making men seek nothing but their own comfort and advantage, and measure everything by these; no peace in the home, because men have forgotten or neglect their duty; the unity and stability of the family undermined; society in a word, shaken to its foundations and on the way to ruin.” (QP. 24) .
Pope Pius XI offered the Church, the Feast of Christ the King to respond to Nationalism and Secularism based on the challenges faced in Europe and North America in 1925. In both isms were extremely ego centered. There was little humility, generosity, compassion and unity in nationalist or secularist movements. The reign of Christ is centered on love of God and neighbor. In many countries of the world there was a rising anti-clericalism that challenged religious leaders and threatened religious leaders with violence.
Today, we also lament the enmities and rivalries between groups, races, political parties, nations and even between religious leaders. There is a tribalism that creates an “us vs. them” society. As time passes, but divisions appear more and more entrenched, with little concern about living together in peace. Many see division as “right vs. left”, “Democrat vs. Republican”, “Conservative vs. Liberal”, but in each case there is a selfishness that seeks their own comfort and advantage. Unity and stability of family are shaken, and society is endangered.
The way of Christ is not right or left, conservative or liberal. It is not a way in the middle or a way of compromise. It is a different way that is not based on individual needs. The great image of the different way is in the gospel of Matthew, chapter 25. It is the way that accepts the responsibility to love our neighbor. “When I was hungry…..” When Pope Pius XI established the feast of Christ the King, the celebration of the feast captured the imagination of many whose lives were soon challenged by the political upheaval in many nations and the looming experience of World War II.
