Ofrecimos una misión sacramental por campesinos durante la cosecha de cerezas en The Dalles, OR todos los veranos durante once años. Cuando comenzamos en 2000, ofrecimos la misión en uno de las huertas que estaba ubicado cerca de la ciudad. Pensamos que podría ser menos intimidante para los trabajadores en una huerta. Mientras teníamos las clases en la huerta, celebrábamos las Primeras Comuniones en la Iglesia de San Pedro. Descubrimos entre la gente que todos sabían dónde estaba la iglesia, porque estaba subiendo la colina atrás los dos supermercados más grandes de The Dalles. Después del primer año, ofrecíamos las clases en la parroquia. Después del segundo año, iniciamos ofrecer clases por la Confirmación a los mayores de doce años. La edad para la Confirmación en la diócesis era de doce años.
Nuestros misioneros tenían un uniforme de camiseta y gorra con un logo que nos identificaba como “Misioneros Redentoristas” (Misioneros Redentoristas). Nuestra miniván con portaequipajes se hizo reconocible entre los trabajadores, y éramos reconocidos dondequiera que íbamos. El cuarto año, cuando llegamos a la ciudad, nuestra primera parada fue para cargar gasolina. Antes de salir de la gasolinera se detuvo un coche a nuestro lado y cuatro jóvenes querían apuntarse a las clases. Cuando llegamos a la iglesia, otra familia nos vio llegar. Antes de estar en la ciudad por una hora teníamos seis personas registradas para las clases.
La constancia de ofrecer el programa todos los veranos durante once años no solo incrementó la participación de los migrantes, sino que nos comprometió a ofrecer bautizos y preparación a las parejas para casarse por la Iglesia. Aquellas familias que recibieron los sacramentos pasaron la noticia en sus comunidades de origen que la Iglesia en The Dalles dio la bienvenida a los migrantes y ofreció programas sacramentales para sus hijos. Muchas personas comenzaron a venir preparadas con certificados de bautismo para registrar a los niños para los sacramentos.
Durante esos once años tuvimos cerca de 1.000 Primeras Comuniones, 400 Confirmaciones, 200 Bautizos y 12 Bodas. Desafortunadamente, el programa dependía demasiado de un sacerdote que coordinaba el programa y cuando no pude continuar con las misiones, la misión terminó.

We offered a sacramental mission for Campesinos during the cherry harvest in The Dalles, OR every summer for eleven years. When we began in 2000, we offered the mission in one of the orchards that was centrally located on the edge of town. We thought that it might be less intimidating for the workers at an orchard. While we had the classes at the orchard, we celebrated the First Communions at St. Peter’s Church in town. We discovered among the people that everyone knew where the Church was, because it was just up the hill from the two largest supermarkets in The Dalles. After the first year, we held the classes at the parish. After the second year, we offered both First Eucharist to the children and Confirmation those twelve and older. The age for Confirmation in the diocese was twelve.
Our missionaries had a uniform of a T-shirt and hat with a logo identifying us as “Misioneros Redentoristas” (Redemptorist Missionaries) Our minivan with a car-top carrier became recognizable among the workers, and we were recognized wherever we went. The fourth year, as we came to town, our first stop was to get gas. Before leaving the gas station a car pulled up beside us and four young men wanted to sign up for the classes. When we arrived at the church, another family saw us arriving. Before we were in town for one hour we had six people registered for the classes.
The consistency of offering the program every summer for eleven years not only increased the participation of the migrants, but engaged us in offering baptisms and preparation for couples to marry in the Church. Those families that received sacraments, spread the news in their home communities that the Church in The Dalles welcomed the migrants and offered sacramental programs for migrants. Many people began to come prepared with baptism certificates for registering children for the sacraments.
During those eleven years we had nearly 1,000 First Communions, 400 Confirmations, 200 baptisms and 12 weddings. Unfortunately, the program depended too much on one priest coordinating the program and when I was unable to continue the missions, the mission ended.
