La Sagrada Familia, Nuestra Familia
Una de las alegrías de la Navidad es escuchar a amigos y familiares a quienes solo veamos con poca frecuencia. En sus tarjetas y cartas navideñas, muchos escriben sobre sus familias. Mis hermanos y hermanas tienen historias que contar de niños que se casan, se comprometen y nacen bebés. Una sobrina fue gravemente herida en un accidente y tiene milagrosa recuperación. Otros miembros de la familia enfrentaron condiciones médicas dificiles. Celebramos graduaciones, confirmaciones, primeras comuniones, bautizos y todas las alegrías de contar bendiciones en la familia.
Como sacerdote, aprendí una lección en la celebración de una quinceañera hace muchos años. Una madre me preguntó por mi familia. Le dije que tengo cuatro hermanas y dos hermanos. En ese momento había quince sobrinos y sobrinas. Uno de mis hermanos no estaba casado y le dije: “Ni él ni yo teníamos hijos”. Ella respondió: “Oh, no, padre”. Extendió los brazos hacia toda la gente reunida para la quinceañera y dijo: “Tienes muchos hijos”. Por eso me gustaría compartir algo de mi familia.

Este ha sido un año bendecido para los Redentoristas de la provincia de Denver. Durante los últimos años ha habido acercamientos entre los Redentoristas de México y mi provincia. Trabajamos cada vez más juntos. El trabajo de nuestra provincia con migrantes e inmigrantes es más que un simple ministerio hispano. Tenemos una larga historia de trabajo con inmigrantes y refugiados en los Estados Unidos. Nuestra historia en los Estados Unidos servimos inmigrantes. En los estados del suroeste, trabajamos con migrantes e inmigrantes que cruzan nuestras fronteras del sur. También trabajamos con inmigrantes asiáticos y refugiados del mundo.
Avanzamos hacia una relación más formal con nuestros cohermanos mexicanos. Este año nuestro noviciado se trasladará a México. Esperamos trabajar más juntos, especialmente respondiendo a migrantes e inmigrantes en ambas naciones. Ore por nuestras iniciativas redentoristas. Que todos los “padres migrantes” redentoristas sean bendecidos en el próximo año.
Mi familia de la misión
Casa San Alfonso: Hace treinta años, los Redentoristas crearon una iniciativa en Denver para trabajar con jóvenes vulnerables en el centro de la ciudad de Denver. Casa San Alfonso empezó como una idea. Queríamos entablar una relación misionera con jóvenes en los márgenes de nuestra iglesia en una parroquia de barrio pobre. Dos sacerdotes y un hermano abrieron una casa, con el objetivo de tener una relación con jóvenes vulnerables. La misión de la casa no estaba definida, pero confiamos en que se desarrollaría una misión en la comunidad. Los jóvenes vinieron y caminamos juntos durante cinco años cuando la casa se suspendió cuando otras iniciativas redentoristas llamaron a nuestros miembros redentoristas de la Casa.
El 1 de agosto de 2021 celebramos el trigésimo aniversario de la fundación de Casa San Alfonso. El día comenzó con la misa en la iglesia de San José. El obispo Jorge Rodríguez, el párroco de la parroquia, al enterarse de nuestra casa de jóvenes, comentó que probablemente no conocería a ninguna de las personas que venían a la reunión. Dos líderes del coro entraron en la sacristía y él los reconoció. Le hablaron de una mujer líder de la arquidiócesis que él conocía y que no podía asistir. Luego ingresaron dos parejas que son líderes en la preparación de parejas para el matrimonio. El obispo Rodríguez comentó que estos son algunos de los mejores líderes hispanos de la arquidiócesis. Entonces dije: “Hace treinta años, eran jóvenes del barrio”.
El día fue uno de recordar lo que la Casa significaba para todos. Un hombre dijo que la Casa le enseñó “Respeto por sí mismo, respeto por los demás y responsabilidad personal”. Algunos a menudo nos decían que los jóvenes se estaban aprovechando de nosotros. Siempre dijimos que queríamos que los jóvenes se aprovecharan de nosotros. Después de la misa nos reunimos en un parque para hacer un picnic; buena comida, grandes historias y nadie quería que acabara el día. Todos expresaron su gratitud por la oportunidad que tuvieron en Casa San Alfonso. Fue abrumador reconocer el crecimiento de nuestros hijos. Para mis cohermanos, les agradecí a todos por aprovechar al máximo la oportunidad que CSA les ofreció. Después de 53 años de vida redentorista, el reencuentro de Casa San Alfonso fue el día más gratificante de mi vida como redentorista.

The Holy Family, Our family
One of the joys of Christmas is hearing from friends and relatives whom we may only see infrequently. In their cards and Christmas letters, many write letters about their families. My brothers and sisters have stories to tell of children getting married, engaged and babies born. We had a close call with one niece badly injured and others facing serious medical conditions. We celebrate graduations, Confirmations, First Communions, Baptisms and all the joys of counting the blessings in our family.
As a priest, I learned a lesson at a quinceañera celebration many years ago. A mother asked me about my family. I told her that I have four sisters and two brothers. At that time there were fifteen nieces and nephews. One of my brothers was not married, and I said, “Neither of us have children.” She responded, “Oh, no Father.” She extended her arms towards all the people gathered for the quinceañera and said, “You have many children.” So, I would like to talk about my family.

This has been a blessed year for Redemptorists of the Denver Province. For the past few years there have been overtures between the Redemptorists of Mexico and my province. We are working more and more together. Our Province’s work with migrants and immigrants is more than simply Hispanic ministry. We have a long history of working with immigrants and refugees in the United States. Our early history in the United States was with immigrants from Europe. In Southwestern states, we worked with migrants and immigrants crossing our southern borders. We also worked with Asian immigrants and refugees of the world.
We are moving towards a more formal relationship with our Mexican confreres. This year our novitiate will move to Mexico. We hope to work more together especially responding to migrants and immigrants in both nations. Pray for our Redemptorist initiatives. May all Redemptorist padres migrantes be blessed in the year ahead.
My Mission Family
Casa San Alfonso: Thirty years ago, Redemptorists created an initiative in Denver to work with vulnerable young people in the inner city of Denver. Casa San Alfonso began as an idea. We wanted to enter a missionary relationship with young people on the fringes of our church in a poor barrio parish. Two priests and a brother opened a house, with the goal of gaining a relationship with vulnerable youth. The mission of the house was undefined, but we trusted that a mission would develop in the community. Young people came and we walked together for five years when the house discontinued as other Redemptorist initiatives called on our Redemptorist members of the Casa.
On August 1, 2021, we celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of Casa San Alfonso. The day began with Mass at St. Joseph’s Church. Bishop Jorge Rodriguez, the pastor of the parish, on hearing about our youth house commented that he would probably not know any of the people coming for the reunion. Then two leaders of the choir entered the sacristy, and he knew them. They told him of a woman leader in the archdiocese that he knew who could not attend. Then two couples entered who are leaders in preparing couples for marriage. Bishop Rodriguez commented that these are some of the best Hispanic leaders in the archdiocese. I then said, “Thirty years ago, they were youth from the barrio.”
The day was one of remembering what the Casa meant to all. One man said that the Casa taught him “Respect for himself, respect for others and personal responsibility.” Outsiders often told us that the youth were just taking advantage of us. We always said that we wanted the young people to take advantage of us. After Mass we gathered in a park for a picnic; great food, great stories and no one wanted the day to end. Everyone expressed gratitude for the opportunity they experienced at Casa San Alfonso. It was overwhelming to recognize the growth of our children. For my confreres, I thanked all for making the most of the opportunity that CSA offered them. After 53 years of Redemptorist life, the Casa San Alfonso reunion was the most rewarding day of my life as a Redemptorist.
New family members: This year introduced me to communities in Stanton, TX, Eden, TX and Madill, OK. In each community, I took the place of pastors for two to three months. Each community has its own character and needs. As a missionary, I am like the apostle Paul. As I travel to these communities, many remind me of the Mexican hospitality that has so enriched my life. When the pastor returns, people bless me for my next mission and tell me of their homes, “Father, you have a home here.” I took a vow of poverty and I have many more homes than the richest people in the world.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
