Un Sacerdote Migrante
Hace dos años me identifiqué con mi ministerio, asumiendo una identidad de “Padre Migrante”. El nombre se originó en mi época como Director del Ministerio Migrante de la Diócesis de Fresno. Es común identificar a un trabajador migrante como “una persona que migra dentro o fuera de un país de origen para buscar trabajo”. El trabajo es temporal y el trabajador es móvil. Existe incertidumbre sobre dónde se puede trabajar en el futuro y qué tipo de trabajo se puede hacer.
Sigo trabajando en comunidades rurales, pero parece que el apodo de Padre Migrante hace más que identificarme con las personas con las que trabajo. Hace dos años, informé a algunos sacerdotes y obispos que tomaría el lugar de los sacerdotes que debían estar fuera de sus parroquias durante dos o cuatro meses. Podrían tomarse un tiempo para desarrollar sus habilidades lingüísticas para trabajar mejor con los feligreses hispanos, tomarse un tiempo para un año sabático o tomar el tiempo necesario para recuperarse de una cirugía o enfermedad. En particular, quería ayudar a los pastores en las comunidades rurales.
Este año puedo decir que soy un trabajador migrante. Como he trabajado en varias ciudades este año, recuerdo que San Pablo hizo una distinción entre su ministerio y el de Apolos en I Corintios. Él dice: “Yo planté, Apolos regó, pero Dios hizo crecer”. (I Cor. 3: 6) Pablo es el misionero y Apolos es el pastor. Vivo como Pablo, plantando semillas, pero siempre mudándome a nuevas comunidades. Este año prediqué los domingos en quince parroquias diferentes, pasando de dos a tres meses en tres comunidades.
Tengo la suerte de tener la oportunidad de servir como sacerdote migrante. Deseo invitar a escribirme a cualquier joven que considere la posibilidad de convertirse en misionero Redentorista. A Migrant Priest
Two years ago, I identified myself with my ministry, taking on an identity “Padre Migrante”. The name originated from my time as the Director for Migrant Ministry for the Diocese of Fresno. It is common to identify a migrant worker as “a person who migrates within a home country or outside it to pursue work.” The work is temporary, and the worker is mobile. There is uncertainty of where one may work in the future and what kind of work one may do.
I continue to work in rural communities, but it appears that the moniker, Padre Migrante does more than identify me with the people with whom I work. Two years ago, I informed some priests and bishops that I would take the place of priests who needed to be away from their parishes for two to four months. They could take time to develop their language skills to better work with Hispanic parishioners, take time for a sabbatical or take time needed to recuperate from surgery or illness. I particularly wanted to help pastors in rural communities.
This year I can say that I am a migrant worker. As I have worded in several towns this year, I recall St. Paul making a distinction between his ministry and that of Apollos in I Corinthians. He says, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.” (I Cor. 3:6) Paul is the missionary and Apollos is the pastor. I have realized that I am living as Paul, planting seeds, but always moving to new communities. This year I preached on Sundays in fifteen different parishes, spending two to three months in three communities.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you.
