El fundamento de la vida moral es escoger. La primera lectura de la Misa del próximo domingo proviene del libro de Sirac. El autor escribe sobre vivir una vida de calidad. Es parte de la literatura de sabiduría de las escrituras. Guía a los lectores que quieren llevar una vida plena en relación con Dios y la comunidad creyente. El libro brinda orientación sobre la vida moral y ética. Nuestro texto para el domingo comienza: “Si tú lo quieres, puedes guardar los mandamientos.” (Sir. 15:15)
Sirac está respondiendo a las personas que ofrecieron una mejor excusa para hacer el mal que el viejo chiste: “El diablo me obligó a hacerlo”. Ellos culparon a Dios por hacerlos débiles. Dijeron: “Fue obra de Dios que me caí”. “Él mismo me ha descarriado”. La clave para Sirac es que tenemos la capacidad de escoger una vida moral.
Como las lecturas de la misa del domingo hablan de los mandamientos, el enfoque está en nuestra capacidad de elegir. Tenemos la libertad de elegir el bien y de elegir menos del bien. La vida es más recompensada cuando elegimos con sabiduría, moralidad y amor.
Mientras celebro cincuenta años como sacerdote este año, muchas personas preguntan por qué elegí ser sacerdote. Me doy cuenta de que responder a un llamado de Dios no es una elección hecha a tiempo, sino muchas elecciones hechas a lo largo del tiempo. Es una decisión de vivir la vida tan plenamente como sea posible. El camino de la vida es un camino tortuoso, tomando algunas buenas decisiones y aprendiendo de las decisiones menos que buenas. No quiero llamarlas malas elecciones. La única mala elección es cuando uno no aprende de los propios errores.
He contado esta historia antes, pero mi papá me enseñó una gran lección. Yo tenía seis. Había caminado hasta la laguna helada para patinar sobre hielo. Llegué a casa muy orgullosa de mí misma. Le dije: “Papá, patiné durante dos horas y nunca me caí”. Papá dijo: “Que lástima. No aprendiste nada”. En la vida, podemos tomar malas decisiones, incluso decisiones dañinas, pero con la gracia de Dios podemos elegir bien. Sirac dijo que, si elegimos vivir según los mandamientos, seremos salvos. Que elijamos bien.

Choices
The foundation of moral life is choice. The first reading for next Sunday’s Mass comes from the book of Sirach. The book is also called, Ecclesiasticus. The author writes about living a quality life. It is part of the wisdom literature of the scriptures. It guides readers who want to lead a fulfilling life in relationship with God and the believing community. The book gives guidance on moral, ethical living. Our text for Sunday begins: “If you choose, you can keep the commandments, they will save you.” (Sir 15:15)
Sirach is responding to people who offered a better excuse for doing evil than the old joke, “The devil made me do it”. They blamed God for making them weak. They said, “It was God’s doing that I fell away.” “He himself has led me astray.” The key for Sirach is that we have choices to make in our lives.
As the readings for Sunday Mass speak about the commandments, the focus is on our ability to choose. We have the freedom to choose good and to choose less than good. Life is most rewarded as we choose wisely, morally and lovingly.
As I celebrate fifty years as a priest this year, many people ask why I chose to become a priest. I realize that responding to a call from God is not one choice made in time, but many choices made over time. It is a decision to live life as fully as I possible. The path of life is a winding path, making some good choices and learning from less than good choices. I do not want to call them bad choices. The only bad choice is when one fails to learn from one’s mistakes.
I have told this story before, but my Dad taught me a great lesson. I was six years old. I had walked to the frozen pond to go ice skating. I came home very proud of myself. I said, “Dad, I skated for two hours and never fell once.” Dad said, “Aw, it’s too bad you didn’t learn anything.” In life, we may make poor choices, even harmful choices, but with the grace of God we can choose well. Sirach said that if we choose to live by the commandments we will be saved. Let us choose well.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
