¿Qué es la Misericordia?

En lugar de responder a la pregunta “¿Qué es la misericordia?”, empiezo por considerar lo que no es. La misericordia no se trata del pecado. No se trata de una violación ni de una injusticia. No se trata de la justificación. No se trata de hacer que la gente pague por su pecado. Siempre me han gustado un par de declaraciones del Papa Pablo VI y del Papa Juan Pablo II sobre la justicia.

Papa Pablo VI: “Si quieres paz, trabaja por justicia”.

Papa Juan Pablo II: “No hay paz sin justicia, no hay justicia sin perdón”.

Pero la misericordia es mejor que justicia o perdón. La misericordia no es solo una respuesta a la injusticia, ni siquiera el acto de perdonar. No se trata del pecado ni del pecador. La misericordia es Dios. En la misericordia vemos a Dios. Jesús no condenó al pecador. Ni siquiera lo perdonó. Simplemente continuó amando a su pueblo. Mostrar misericordia no condona el pecado ni las acciones de un pecador. Simplemente es el amor de Dios. Es muy difícil de comprender para la humanidad. No ganamos ni perdemos el amor de Dios. Jesús amó al ladrón arrepentido en la cruz y amó al ladrón impenitente. Lo único imposible para Dios es no amar.

El deseo de cambiar el enfoque de la migración como un problema, una violación, un delito o una invasión no se trata de condonar ni condenar ninguna acción, ya sea de quienes migran o de quienes castigan a los migrantes. Necesitamos encontrar a Dios al responder al migrante y a los desafíos que plantea.

Al considerar al migrante… al considerar la migración… necesitamos misericordia, porque en la misericordia está Dios.

What is Mercy?

Instead of trying to answer the question, “What is mercy?”, I begin by considering what it is not. Mercy is not about the sin. It is not about a violation, or an injustice. It is not about justification. It is not about making people pay for their sin. I have always loved a couple statements of Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II on justice.

Pope Paul VI: “If you want peace, work for justice.”

Pope John Paul II: “No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness.”

But mercy is more than justice or even forgiveness. Mercy is not only a response to injustice, or even the act of forgiveness. It is not about the sin or the sinner. Mercy is God. In mercy we see God. Jesus did not condemn the sinner. He didn’t even forgive the sinner. He just continued to love his people. To show mercy does not condone sin or the actions of a sinner. It simply is God loving. It is so difficult for human understanding. We do not earn God’s love or lose God’s love. Jesus loved the repentant thief on the cross and he loved the unrepentant thief. The one thing that is impossible for God is to not love.

The desire to change the focus on migration as a problem, a violation, a crime, or an invasion is not about condoning or condemning any action, whether by those who migrate or by those who punish migrants. We need to find God as we respond to the migrant and the challenges that migration poses.

When considering the migrant…when considering migration….we need mercy, because in mercy, there is God.

Sobre el cambio del enfoque

Cuando se enfoca la migración como una violación, la respuesta típica busca corregirla, castigarla o cambiarla. Cuando se ofrece perdón o una nación declara una amnistía, se espera un nuevo comienzo, pero la violación no se olvida. No importa cuán generoso sea el perdón, siempre queda una cicatriz duradera.

Del perdón a la misericordia

Si bien Jesús vino a cumplir las Escrituras, su mensaje trascendió el mensaje de Juan el Bautista. Juan proclamó el perdón de Dios y lo selló con el bautismo de agua. Jesús fue testigo de la misericordia de Dios. Su mensaje fue la misericordia de Dios. La misericordia es más del perdón. Las acciones de Jesús y sus parábolas no se centran en el pecado, sino en Dios.

Mientras el Hijo Pródigo intentaba profesar su arrepentimiento, el padre les dijo a los sirvientes que le pusieran un anillo en el dedo, sandalias en los pies, un manto lujoso para la fiesta y prepararan el “becerro cebado”. No se menciona ninguna violación pasada ni siquiera el perdón. El padre es Misericordia.

Jesús no perdonó a la mujer sorprendida en adulterio; mostró misericordia. Dijo que no la condenaba. No perdonó a Pedro por negar a Jesús, pero tres veces le dijo: «Apacienta mis ovejas».

Cuando Leví, el recaudador de impuestos, cayó del árbol, Jesús ignoró sus pecados pasados; iba a cenar en su casa. Cuando los fariseos le preguntaron a Jesús sobre comer con recaudadores de impuestos y pecadores, Jesús les dijo: «Vayan y aprendan el significado de las palabras: ‘Quiero misericordia, no sacrificio’». Jesús cambió el enfoque del Antiguo Testamento sobre el pecado a su anuncio de la misericordia de Dios.

Misericordia y el migrante

En un momento en que el gobierno estadounidense se involucra en una campaña de castigo y negación de los derechos humanos de los migrantes e inmigrantes, debemos reconocer que Dios es misericordia y que todas las personas marginadas de la sociedad y de nuestra fe necesitan a Dios. No solo los marginados necesitan a Dios, todos lo necesitamos. En la gracia o en la vergüenza, nuestra relación con el migrante es un reflejo de nuestra relación con Dios, que es Misericordia.

About changing focus

When on focuses on migration as a violation, the typical response wants to correct it, punish it or change it. When one offers forgiveness or a nation declares amnesty, a new beginning is expected, but the violation is not forgotten. No matter how generous the forgiveness, there is a lasting scar.

From forgiveness to mercy

While Jesus came to fulfill the Scriptures, his message went beyond the message of John the Baptist. John proclaimed God´s forgiveness and signed it with the Baptism of water. Jesus witnessed God’s mercy. His message was not God’s forgiveness, but God’s mercy. Mercy goes beyond forgiveness. Jesus actions and his parables do not dwell on the sin, but on God who is mercy.

While the Prodigal Son tried to profess his repentance, the father told the servants to put a ring on his finger, sandals on his feet, a luxurious robe for the feast and prepare the ‘fatted calf’. There is no mention of past violation or even forgiveness. The father is Mercy.

Jesus did not forgive the woman caught in adultery; he showed mercy. He said that he did not condemn her. He did not forgive Peter for his denials of Jesus, but three times told him, “Feed my sheep.”

When Levi, the tax collector, fell out of the tree, Jesus pays no attention to past sins, he was going to dine in Levi’s house. When the Pharisees ask Jesus about eating with tax collectors and sinners, Jesus tells them, “Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’” Jesus changed the focus on sin of the Old Testament to his announcement of the mercy of God.

Mercy and the migrant

At a time when the U.S. government engages in a campaign of punishment and denial of human rights to migrants and immigrants, we need to recognize that God is mercy and that all people on the margins of society and our faith need God. Not only do those on the margins need God, all of us need God. In grace or shame, our relationship with the migrant is a mirror of our relationship with God who is Mercy.

Entender la migración – Caminar con migrantes

Para comprender al migrante, la información es solo una parte del camino. Se puede conocer su nombre, fecha de nacimiento, lugar de origen, historia religioso y educativo, dificultades laborales, compañeros, estado civil, entorno social y más. Toda esta información forma parte de la historia del migrante, pero aprender a escuchar con más atención es esencial. Se puede hablar el idioma, conocer la región de donde proviene y tener años de experiencia con otros migrantes, pero cada migrante es más que una estadística.

Escuchar y acompañar al migrante proporciona contexto para comprenderlo. Las acciones que realizamos después de escuchar bien son simplemente puntos de partida para comprender la migración. Necesitamos reconocer al migrante no como un cliente o un sujeto, sino como un compañero.

Como católicos, celebramos la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado cada año desde 1915. Los mensajes de los santos papas nos enseñan la evolución de la doctrina católica sobre la migración desde la Primera Guerra Mundial hasta la actualidad. Considerando los mensajes del papa San Juan Pablo II, el papa Benedicto XVI, el papa Francisco y el papa León XIV, podemos comprender mejor la migración y disfrutar acompañando a los migrantes.

Understanding migration – Walking with migrants

To understand the migrant, information is only part of the journey. One may know the migrant’s name, date of birth, place of origin, religious and education records, employment challenges, companions, marriage status, social environment, and more. All of this information is part of the migrant’s story, but learning to listen with more than one’s ears is essential. One may speak the language, have knowledge about the region where the migrant comes from, and have years of experience with others who have migrated, but each migrant is more than a statistic.

Listening and walking with the migrant gives context to understanding the migrant. Actions that we take after listening well are simply starting points of the journey to understand migration. We need to recognize the migrant not as a client or subject, but a compañero. (it means companion, but in Spanish it means much more.)

As Catholics, we have celebrated a World Day of Migrants and Refugees each year since 1915. The messages of Popes teach us of the development of Catholic teaching on migration from the time of World War I until the present time. Considering the messages of Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV, one may discover greater understanding of migration and come to enjoy walking with migrants.

Sobre cambiar el tema de la inmigración

Gracias a quienes me contactaron en relación con la publicación del 7 de agosto sobre la necesidad de “cambiar el tema” de la inmigración. Muchas personas reconocen la contribución positiva de los inmigrantes a nuestro estilo de vida en la atención médica, la agricultura, la construcción, la administración pública, el cuidado infantil, el mantenimiento y muchas otras áreas. Los inmigrantes y sus familias son vecinos, amigos, compañeros de escuela, compañeros de trabajo, cónyuges y familiares de ciudadanos estadounidenses. Son creyentes y participan en nuestras iglesias. Tienen menos probabilidades de ser delincuentes o amenazas para la sociedad que la población general de la sociedad estadounidense.

Cambiar el tema comienza con la expectativa de que Estados Unidos pueda recuperar la visión de los fundadores de esta nación, quienes escribieron: “Consideramos que estas verdades son evidentes: que todos los hombres son creados iguales; que son dotados por su Creador con ciertos derechos inalienables; que entre estos están la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad”.

About changing the focus on immigration

Thank you to those who have contacted me about the August 7 post on needing to “change the focus” on immigration. Many people recognize the positive contribution of immigrants to our way of life in health care, agriculture, construction, civil service, child care, maintenance and so many other ways. Immigrants and their families are neighbor, friends, schoolmates, fellow workers, spouses and family members of U.S. citizens. They are believers and participants in churches. They are less likely to be criminals or threats to society than the general population of American society.

Changing the focus begins with an expectation that the United States can regain the vision of this nation’s founders who wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Tenemos que cambiar el tema de la inmigración

No hay chiste continuar el enfoque político sobre migración. Este enfoque solo termina en una negatividad que corrumpe el espíritu y llega a resultos injustos y dañosos. Si uno sólo ve peligro y malas intenciones en otra persona, hay pocas esperanzas de una respuesta positiva y no violenta a la amenaza percibida.

Mis treinta y cinco años caminando con inmigrantes han sido la mayor alegría de mi sacerdocio. Cuando dirigí nuestro equipo de misión bilingüe de 1996 a 2001, ofrecíamos misiones de dos semanas en las parroquias. Teníamos una semana en inglés y otra en español. Los laicos del equipo solían decir: “Se ven más felices durante la semana en español”. No era que participara menos en la semana en inglés, sino que nuestra misión se formó para ayudar a los participantes hispanos a sentirse más a gusto en la Iglesia Católica aquí. La comunidad hispana sintió nuestro cariño y nos lo devolvió.

Las imágenes negativas de los inmigrantes en los medios y la política simplemente no han sido mi experiencia. Cuando las personas saben que veo su bondad, aspiran a reflejar esa bondad en sus vidas.

We have to change the immigration focus

There’s no point in continuing today’s political approach to migration. This approach only ends in a negativity that corrupts the spirit and leads to unjust and harmful results. If one only sees danger and evil intent in another person, there is little hope for a positive, nonviolent response to the perceived threat.

My thirty-five years walking with immigrants has been the greatest joy of my priesthood. When I ran our bilingual mission team from 1996-2001, we offered two-week parish missions in parishes. We had one week in English and one week in Spanish. The lay members of the team often said, “You appear happier during the Spanish week.” It wasn’t that I was less engaged in the English week, but our mission was formed to help the Spanish speaking participants to feel more at home in the Catholic Church in America. The Spanish community felt our love and they returned the love.

The negative images of immigrants in media and politics simply have not been my experience. When people know that I see their goodness, they aspire to mirror that goodness in their lives.

Misioneros en la lucha

Si los migrantes son “Misioneros de la Esperanza”, tenemos que acompañarlos. Tenemos que ser “misioneros en la lucha”. No tengan miedo. Vivimos en tiempo difícil, pero el mundo necesita nosotros en la lucha por la humanidad, la dignidad, la fe y la esperanza. Tenemos oficinas de evangelización, de caridad católica, de pastoral juvenil, de justicia y paz, de la familia y de cuidado espiritual. Hacemos buenos programas e invertimos mucho en lo que podemos hacer por los marginados. Pero, ¿Acompañamos a los pobres, los marginados, los migrantes? ¿Aprendemos de las luchas?

Cuando estaba en grado primero recibí un regalo especial por la Navidad, patinas de hielo. Unos días después fui a una laguna para patinar. Regresé a mi casa y le dije a mi papá, “Papá, patiné durante dos horas y no me caí ni una sola vez”. Él dijo: “Ay, qué lástima que no hayas aprendido nada”. A partir de ese momento aprendí que estaba bien fracasar, si aprendía de la experiencia.

No importa si se caiga, levántese y aprende de la caída. A veces tenemos que caer muchas veces para tener una vida mejor. Lo importa es levantarse y volver a la lucha. Esto se puede aprender en los deportes, pero también en las relaciones con los demás, en el ministerio, en la dignidad y en el espíritu. Lo inútil es el miedo, la vergüenza y la rendición.

Hay poca valentía entre los líderes mundiales hoy en día. Se observa en todo el mundo, pero sobre todo en las naciones más poderosas del mundo. Los líderes políticos ni siquiera fingen respetar a su gente ni preocuparse por los menos afortunados. No necesitamos acompañarlos, apoyarlos, ni animarlos. Tienen más de lo que nadie podría necesitar, así que no tienen esperanza. La vida del migrante no es fácil, pero lo que tienen es dignidad y esperanza. Missionaries in the struggle

If migrants are “Missionaries of Hope,” we need to accompany them. We must be “missionaries in the struggle.” Do not be afraid. We live in difficult times, but the world needs us in the fight for humanity, dignity, faith, and hope. We have offices of evangelization, Catholic charity, justice and peace, youth ministry, family ministry, and spiritual care. We run good programs and invest heavily in what we can do for the marginalized. But do we accompany them, the poor, the marginalized, and migrants? Do we learn from the struggles?

When I was in first grade, I received a special gift for Christmas: ice skates. A few days later, I went to a pond to skate. I returned home and told my dad, “Dad, I skated for two hours and didn’t fall once.” He said, “Aw. It´s too bad you didn’t learn anything.” From that moment, I learned that it was okay to fail, as long as you learned from the experience.

It doesn’t matter if you fall; get up and learn from the fall. Sometimes we have to fall many times to become a better person. The important thing is to get up and re-enter the struggle. This can be learned in sports, but also in relationships with others, in ministry, in dignity, and in spirit. What’s useless is fear, shame and giving up.

There is too little courage in world leaders today. It is seen across the globe, but most especially in the most powerful nations on earth. Political leaders do not even pretend to respect their people and care for the less fortunate. We do not need to accompany them, support them or encourage them. They have more than anyone could need, so they have no “hope”. The life of the migrant is not easy, but what they have is dignity and hope. Let us join them and become “missionaries of hope.”

Migrantes, Misioneros de la Esperanza

Cuando el Papa Francisco inauguró el Año Jubilar 2025, nos llamó a ser “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”. Siguiendo con ese tema, el Papa León XIV nos invita a reconocer a los migrantes como “Misioneros de la Esperanza”. No solo reconoce la dignidad, la valentía, la fe y la esperanza que demuestran los emigrantes, sino que los reconoce como testigos de la esperanza. Su mensaje contrarresta a quienes promueven una narrativa antiinmigrante. Gracias, Papa León XIV, por llamar la atención sobre las buenas personas que encuentran esperanza en las situaciones más difíciles.

Migrants as Missionaries of Hope

When Pope Francis introduced the Jubilee Year 2025, he called on us to be “Pilgrims of Hope”. Continuing that theme, Pope Leo XIV invites us to recognize migrants as being “Missionaries of Hope.” Not only does he recognize the dignity, courage, faith and hope demonstrated by emigrants, but he recognizes the migrants as witnesses to hope. His message is a counter balance to those who promote an antiimmigrant narrative. Thank you, Pope Leo XIV, for calling attention to the good people who find hope in the most challenging of situations.

Carisma de San Alfonso

Mientras los Redentoristas celebramos hoy  la festividad de San Alfonso, he estado reflexionando sobre la Constitución n.° 3. Si bien la constitución proviene de nuestra regla, aprobada después del Concilio Vaticano II, este carisma es lo que siempre nos ha motivado. Consideren nuestro carisma. Refleja fielmente a nuestro fundador, quien nos dijo que debíamos servir a los “más abandonados”.

Hoy, nuestro ministerio con migrantes, inmigrantes y otras personas difamadas y oprimidas. Oremos por los “más abandonados”.

“Los más abandonados, a los que la Congregación es enviada de modo especial, son aquellos a quienes la Iglesia no ha podido proporcionar aún medios suficientes de salvación; los que nunca oyeron el mensaje de la Iglesia o no lo aceptan al menos como buena nueva, y finalmente aquellos a quienes perjudica la división de la Iglesia”.

Charism of St. Alphonsus

As Redemptorists today celebrate the feast of St. Alphonsus, I have been reflecting on Constitution #3. While the constitution is from our rule approved after the Second Vatican Council, this charism is what has always motivated Redemptorists. Consider our charism. It truly reflects our founder who told us that we were to serve the “most abandoned”.

Today, our ministry with migrants, immigrants and others maligned and oppressed. Pray for the “most abandoned”.

“The most abandoned, to whom in particular the Congregation is sent, are those for whom the Church has not yet been able to provide sufficient means of salvation, those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News”, and finally those who suffer harm because of division in the Church.”  (C.Ss.R. Const. 3)

Seeing good in others / Ver el bien en los demás

Ver el bien en los demás

«Ustedes vieron bondad en nosotros que no se notaron nosotros y queríamos vivir a nivel de sus expectativas. Y cuando caemos, ustedes no nos abandonaron. Somos quienes somos hoy gracias a la Casa San Alfonso».

Dos hombres reflexionaron sobre su experiencia en nuestra comunidad juvenil redentorista en Casa San Alfonso, Denver (1991-1996). Al recordar sus experiencias con los Redentoristas de la Casa, recordaron momentos especiales de aquellos años. En los buenos y en los malos momentos, nos convertimos en una familia. Sin embargo, aunque recordaban momentos buenos y algunos difíciles, su recuerdo más preciado de la Casa fue reconocer su propia bondad, algo que nadie podía quitarles.

Los problemas que vemos en el mundo actual solo se resolverán cuando reconozcamos el bien en el mundo y en las personas. Dios miró a toda la creación y dijo: “Es buena”. No importa lo que haga gente, si creemos en la Palabra de Dios, tenemos que ver el bien que Dios ve en ellos. El pecado es la respuesta de los que no son malos, sino que realmente están enfermos. Su malestar puede manifestarse en actos de violencia, odio, racismo y mala voluntad, pero las personas no se definen por su enfermedad. Tampoco por sus actos desconsiderados o violentos. Cuando uno llega a conocer su propia bondad, una vida buena se hace posible.

Que Dios bendiga a todas las personas con el don de reconocer a Dios en su interior, porque Dios es bueno.

Seeing good in others

“You saw good in us that we did not see in ourselves, and we wanted to live up to your expectations. Even when we messed up, you never gave up on us. We are who we are because of Casa San Alfonso.”

Two men reflected on their experience of our Redemptorist youth community at Casa San Alfonso in Denver, (1991-1996). As they reminisced about their experiences with the Redemptorists of the Casa, they recalled special moments over those years. In good times and in uncomfortable times, we became a family. Yet, while they recalled good times and some difficult moments, their fondest memory of the Casa was coming to recognize their own goodness and no one could take that away from them.

The problems that we see in our world today will only be resolved when we recognize good in our world and in people. God looked at all of creation and said, “It is good.” No matter what people do, if we believe in the Word of God, we must see the good that God sees in them. Sin is the response of people who are not evil, but they are not well. Their “not wellness” may be seen in acts of violence, hatred, racism, and ill will, but people are not defined by their illness. Nor are they defined by their inconsiderate or hurtful acts. When one comes to know their own goodness, a good life becomes possible.

May God bless all people with the gift of recognizing God within them, because God is good.

Al considerar acoger a un forastero, deberíamos escuchar el saludo de Abraham a los forasteros que pasaban junto a su tienda en la primera lectura de la Misa de hoy:

“Señor mío, si he hallado gracia a tus ojos, te ruego que no pases junto a mí sin detenerte. Haré que traigan un poco de agua para que se laven los pies y descansen a la sombra de estos árboles; traeré pan para que recobren las fuerzas y después continuarán su camino, pues sin duda para eso han pasado junto a su siervo”.

El mundo sería mucho mejor si siguiéramos el ejemplo de Abraham.

To be like Abraham

When considering welcoming a stranger, we should listen to Abraham’s greeting to the strangers passing by his tent in the first reading of today’s Mass:

“Sir, if I may ask you this favor,
please do not go on past your servant.
Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet,
and then rest yourselves under the tree.
Now that you have come this close to your servant,
let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves;
and afterward you may go on your way.”

The world would be a much better place if we tried Abraham’s way.
