Carry our cross

“Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” (Lk 14:27)

Often the most admired people in our world are those who overcome great obstacles to accomplish great things. A childhood friend, a very good athlete had an accident that cut off his right hand. One of the first things he asked for after coming out of surgery was, give me a pen and paper. He began writing with his left hand. He lost his right hand, but from now on he would use his left. He was going to carry his cross and not let the cross in his life stop him.

It does no good to feel sorry for oneself or to be angry at the crosses we must bear. There are many stories to tell about those who have experienced serious losses in their lives and using those moments to accomplish things that they never would have imagined doing until the crisis in their lives arrived and they met the cross with dignity, courage and grace.

In tragic moments, the cross is obvious. Carrying the cross for each migrant is unique. All of the steps towards a decision to leave one’s country in hope for a better life challenge a person’s self-respect, respect for others and faith. Migration is the migrant’s cross. Carrying that cross is part of becoming a disciple of Christ.

Ministry for and with migrants supports the migrant to realize the call to discipleship. May we always pray for those who carry their cross.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
