El primer mártir americano – Beato Stanley Rother
(Hoy es la fiesta del Beato Stanley Rother. Escribí este en enero 2022, pero me gustaría recordarlo, este día conmemorando el día de su muerte.)
El beato Stanley Rother fue beatificado el 23 de septiembre de 2017. Nació el 27 de marzo de 1935 en Okarche, Oklahoma. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 1963. Después de cinco años como pastor asociado en Oklahoma, se ofreció como voluntario para unirse a la misión de Oklahoma en Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. Sirvió a la tribu de los Tz’utujil, descendientes de los mayas. Estalló una guerra civil entre el gobierno militar y la guerrilla. Regresó a los Estados Unidos después de que su nombre estuviera en una lista de muerte. No se quedó mucho tiempo. Dijo que “el pastor no puede correr”. Regresó por Semana Santa. El 28 de junio de 1981 fue martirizado. El Papa Francisco lo declaró mártir en 2015.

The First American Martyr – Blessed Stanley Rother
(Today is the feast of Blessed Stanley Rother. This post was written in January 2022, but it is appropriate to consider it today, on this day commemorating the day of his martyrdom.)
Blessed Stanley Rother was beatified on September 23, 2017. He was born on March 27, 1935 in Okarche, Oklahoma. He was ordained in 1963. After five years as an associate pastor in Oklahoma, he volunteered to join Oklahoma’s mission in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. He served the tribe of the Tz’utujil, descendants of the Mayans. A civil war raged between the military government and guerillas. He returned to the United States after his name was on a death list. He did not stay long. He said that “the shepherd cannot run”. He returned for Holy Week. On June 28, 1981 he was martyred. Pope Francis declared him a martyr in 2015.
For the past month, I have been working in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. It has been impressive to learn about this ordinary priest, a missionary and martyr. His life, mission and death have made Oklahoma proud of one of their own being recognized as a martyr and now beatified.
