Portadores de una memoria histórica
Ayer, descubrí información histórica sobre el ministerio de trabajadores migrantes en Onley, Virginia. Los últimos dos días, escribí acerca de mi visita a Onley para presentar CMFN a los voluntarios actuales de la Misión Migrante de la Costa Este. Ayer escribí sobre el CMFN como “portadores de una memoria histórica, el presente y el caminar hacia el futuro”. Lo que ha sido de interés en mi venida a Onley es que había un programa de ministerio migrante organizado en Onley y el CMFN ofreció ayuda para la formación del ministerio en esta comunidad en 1991. Un problema es que, por alguna razón, hubo una interrupción en el alcance organizado a los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes a lo largo del tiempo y el equipo actual del ministerio migrante se sorprendió de que las comunidades en la costa este de Virginia tuvieran un alcance migrante organizado hace treinta años.
Mientras caminaba por el pueblo de Onley ayer, pasé por un edificio antiguo que tenía un letrero sobre la puerta que simplemente decía “Café”. Entré esperando café bar, pero descubrí a dos personas remodelando el edificio. Me informaron que allí había una café que no sobrevivió a la pandemia del COVID. Estaban preparando el lugar como el Centro del Patrimonio de la Costa Este de Virginia. Están convirtiendo el antiguo edificio del banco, luego Coffee House, en un Centro del Patrimonio. Hablaron de preservar la memoria histórica de esta parte de Virginia. Cuando les comenté sobre mi interés en la historia de la pastoral migrante en esta región, una de las archivistas dijo que había leído sobre la pastoral campesina que tuvo lugar en esta región en los años ’80 y ’90. Mi interés por la historia de la región y diciéndome que ella es católica, empezamos a recuperar algo de la memoria histórica del ministerio migrante en Virginia.
Nótese la importancia de preservar la memoria histórica expresada en el blog de ayer sobre el CMFN. Durante los próximos diez días, disfrutaré aprendiendo sobre los trabajadores rurales migrantes en la costa este de Virginia. Cuando llegué aquí, no me di cuenta de que esta preocupación ministerial tiene una historia más larga de lo que incluso muchos en esta comunidad sabían. Que siempre nos permitamos la magia de aprender cosas nuevas de nuestra historia.

Bearers of a historical memory
Yesterday, I discovered historical information about farmworker ministry in Onley, Virginia. The past two days, I wrote about my going to Onley to introduce CMFN to the present Eastern Shore Migrant Mission volunteers. Yesterday, I wrote about CMFN as the “bearers of a historical memory, the present, and the journey into the future.” What has been of interest in my coming to Onley is that there was an organized migrant ministry program taking place in Onley and the CMFN offered help to the formation of ministry in this community in 1991. A problem is that for some reason, there was a gap in organized outreach to migrant farmworkers over time and the present migrant ministry team has been surprised that the communities on the Eastern Shore of Virginia had an organized migrant outreach thirty years ago.
As I walked around the town of Onley yesterday, I walked by an old building that had a sign above the door simply saying, “Coffee”. I entered expecting a coffee shop, but discovered two people remodeling the building. They informed me that there was a coffee shop there that did not survive the COVID pandemic. They were preparing the storefront as the Eastern Shore of Virginia Heritage Center. They are converting the old bank building, later Coffee House into a Heritage Center. They spoke of preserving the historical memory of this part of Virginia. When I told them about my interest in the history of migrant ministry in this region, one of the archivists said that she read about campesino ministry taking place in this region in the 1980’s and 90’s. My interest in the history of the region and telling me that she is Catholic, we began recovery of some of the historic memory of migrant ministry in Virginia.
Note the importance of preserving historical memory stated in yesterday’s blog about CMFN. For the next ten days, I will enjoy learning about migrant rural workers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. When I arrived here, I did not realize that this ministry concern has a longer history than even many in this community was aware of. May we always allow ourselves the magic of learning new things about our history.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
