No teman
“No temas, pequeño Rebaño, porque el Padre de ustedes ha querido darles el Reino.” (Lc 12: 50)
En el Sermón de la Montaña, Jesús llama a sus seguidores a más que la observancia de los Diez Mandamientos. Confiados en que Dios nunca nos da una obligación que no podamos cumplir, reconozcamos que no debemos considerar como una carga la ampliación de Jesús de los significados mínimos de los Mandamientos. Dejar de lado la ira y vivir fielmente la propia vocación nos llama a vivir más allá de los mandamientos, a una vida de amor y paz. En varias ocasiones Jesús calma los miedos de sus seguidores para que no tengan miedo como cuando calmó el mar o en el pasaje anterior. La fe no se trata de temer al pecado, sino de poner nuestra confianza en Dios.
Como seguidores de Jesús, confiamos en la misericordia y el amor de Dios. No importa cuán difícil sea nuestra vida, estamos en las manos de Dios. A menudo nos distraemos del amor de Dios cuando consideramos los deberes, deseos y posibilidades de nuestras vidas. Nos ocupamos en muchas cosas que necesitamos, queremos o nos sentimos obligados a hacer, en lugar de confiar en Dios. Nos volvemos como Marta a quien Jesús le dijo: “Marta, Marta, estás ansiosa y preocupada por muchas cosas. Hay necesidad de una sola cosa. María ha escogido la mejor parte y no se la quitarán.” (Lc 10, 41-42)
Cuando visité los campamentos de migrantes en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México este verano, me sorprendió la paz de tantos migrantes. Toman la difícil y peligrosa decisión de dejar su país de origen para buscar una vida mejor en un lugar desconocido. Viajan con pocos recursos y poca protección. Viajan muchos días, incluso meses, viajando con grandes penurias para llegar a la frontera. No están seguros de si llegarán a un lugar de refugio. Sin embargo, las dificultades refinan el alma. Las preocupaciones son compañeras constantes en este camino, pero al encontrarse con los migrantes hay aceptación y agradecimiento por el momento. En la fe, encuentran la paz.
En los momentos ajetreados de la vida, es difícil apreciar las relaciones que damos por sentadas. Los miedos y las angustias nos acosan, pero Jesús nos invita a prestar atención a todo lo que realmente importa. Los migrantes nos muestran lo que significa “no tener miedo”.

Be not afraid
Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. (Lk. 12: 50)
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls on his followers to more than observance of the Ten Commandments. Confident that God never gives us an obligation that we cannot fulfill, let us recognize that we should not consider Jesus’ expansion of the minimum meanings of the Commandments as a burden. To set aside anger and to live faithfully one’s vocation calls on us to live beyond the commandments, to a life of love and peace. On several occasions Jesus reassures his followers not to be afraid as when he calmed the sea or in the passage above. Faith is not about fear of sin, but placing our trust in God.
As followers of Jesus, we trust in God´s mercy and love. No matter how difficult our life may be, we are in the hands of God. We are often distracted from the love of God as we consider the shoulds, woulds and coulds of our lives. We become occupied in many things that we need, want or feel obliged to do, rather than trusting in God. We become like Martha to whom Jesus said, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” (Lk 10: 41-42)
When visiting migrant camps on the United States / Mexico border this summer, I was surprised by the peace of so many migrants. They make the difficult and dangerous decision to leave their country of origin to seek a better life in an unknown place. They travel with few resources and little protection. They travel many days, even months, traveling with great hardship to arrive at the border. They are uncertain if they will arrive at a place of refuge. Yet, hardship refines the soul. Worries are constant companions on this journey, but when meeting the migrants there is acceptance and gratitude for the moment. In faith, they find peace.
In the busy moments of life, it is difficult to appreciate the relationships that we take for granted. Fears and anxieties press on us, but Jesus invites us to pay attention to all that really matters. Migrants show us what it means to “be not afraid.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
