A menudo, la gente pide los sacramentos de iniciación para sus hijos en momentos inoportunos. Piden el Bautismo, la Primera Comunión y la Confirmación de sus hijos cuando salen de la Iglesia después de la Misa dominical. Las solicitudes pueden llegar en cualquier momento del año. La gente viene a una misa o celebración especial y este es el momento en que piden los sacramentos para sus hijos. Algunos pueden considerar estos momentos inoportunos para pedir la gracia del sacramento, pero es el momento simplemente inconveniente para el ministerio ordinario de una parroquia.
Cuando trabajamos con inmigrantes, estamos trabajando con personas que no están seguras de su futuro. El migrante puede sentirse inseguro en su presencia en la comunidad. El trabajador migrante tiene múltiples habilidades, pero trabajan temporalmente, moviéndose de un trabajo a otro. A menudo, me han contactado para recibir sacramentos para niños cuando los inmigrantes participan en un bautismo para el hijo de un pariente. La petición surge porque la gente ha experimentado la gracia del sacramento dado a un familiar. Preguntan: “¿Qué debo hacer para bautizar a mi hijo?”
Estas peticiones no se hacen cuando se inicia un programa parroquial, sino cuando el Espíritu mueve a un migrante a pedir la gracia del sacramento. El tiempo es apropiado para el peticionario, incluso si es inconveniente para el sacerdote (diácono o ministro parroquial). ¿Cómo vamos a responder a la solicitud inconveniente?
La hija del granjero
Durante nuestra misión de cosecha de cerezas en Oregón, inscribimos a migrantes en nuestro programa de verano para la Primera Comunión. Era nuestro primer año de la misión y el pastor imaginó nuestro programa solo para los trabajadores migrantes, no para los niños locales. En un campamento, tres niñas que ingresaban al octavo grado se inscribieron en el programa. Sus familias venían cada verano a este campamento. Las chicas a lo largo de los años se hicieron mejores amigas de la hija del dueño. Las tres niñas se inscribieron a las clases y la hija del granjero preguntó si ella también podía recibir su Primera Comunión.
Fui a ver a sus padres y descubrí que eran católicos, pero que solo iban a la iglesia tres o cuatro veces al año. Confesaron que no eran católicos muy activos, pero que si su hija quisiera recibir la Eucaristía, seguro que no la detendrían. El pastor reconoció que la niña pidió en su momento oportuno y que la pudimos aceptar en el programa. Era una de las mejores alumnas de la clase y el día de su Primera Comunión, sus abuelos nos agradecieron por nuestro programa. Dijeron: “Gracias por hacer que nuestra nieta forme parte de esta clase de Primera Comunión. Esto puede ser lo que haga que nuestra hija y nuestro yerno regresen a la Iglesia”.

“The sacred ministers cannot refuse the sacraments to those who ask for them at appropriate times.” (Canon 843)
Often, people ask for the sacraments of initiation for their children at inconvenient times. They ask for Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation of their children as they are leaving the Church after Sunday Mass. The requests may come at any time of the year. People come to a special Mass or celebration and this is the moment when they ask for sacraments for their children. Some may consider these moments inappropriate for asking for the grace of sacrament, but is the moment simply inconvenient for the ordinary ministry of a parish.
When working with migrants, we are working with people who are uncertain of their future. The migrant may be insecure in their presence in a community. The migrant worker has multiple skills, but they work temporarily, moving from one job to another. Often, I have been approached for sacraments for children when migrants participate in a baptism for a relative’s child. The request comes as the people have experienced the grace of sacrament given to a relative. They ask, “What do I need to do to have my child baptized? “
These petitions are not made when a parish program is beginning, but when the Spirit moves a migrant to ask for the grace of sacrament. The timing is appropriate for the petitioner, even if it is inconvenient for the priest (deacon or parish minister). How are we to respond to the inconvenient request?
The farmer’s daughter
During our cherry harvest mission in Oregon, we enrolled migrants for our summer program for First Communion. It was our first year of the mission and the pastor envisioned our program as only for the migrant workers, not for the local children. At one camp, three girls going into eighth grade registered for the program. Their families came each summer to this camp. The girls over the years became best friends with the daughter of the owner. The three girls registered for the classes and the farmer’s daughter asked if she could also receive her First Communion.
I went to her parents and discovered that they were Catholics, but only went to Church three or four times a year. They confessed that they were not very active Catholics, but if their daughter wanted to receive Eucharist, they certainly would not stop her. The pastor recognized that the girl asked at her appropriate time and that we could accept her in the program. She was one of the better students in the class, and on the day of her First Communion, her grandparents thanked us for our program. They said, “Thank you for making our granddaughter part of this First Communion class. This may be what brings our daughter and son-in-law back to the Church.”
