Una fe terrenal
Mi caminar con los trabajadores del campo me presentó a personas como las que siguieron a Jesús. Jesús vio la fe en la gente común. Conoció la fe de los que no fueron formados en las sinagogas ni a los pies de los grandes maestros de la escritura. Conoció la fe de los pescadores, los agricultores, los pecadores y los santos. Eran gente común; cuya fe era práctica y real. Los seguidores de Jesús estaban cerca de la naturaleza. Su fe era terrenal. Lo escucharon enseñar sobre el Padre celestial, la compasión y el amor de Dios. Habló como alguien con autoridad y sabiduría. Dio esperanza a los desesperanzados y perdón a los pecadores.
Es una bendición trabajar con gente que trabaja la tierra. La fe católica es una fe terrenal. Es una fe que no es mágica ni superficial. Es la fe de las personas que verdaderamente creen que son amadas por Dios. Es la fe de las personas que conocen la soledad, las dificultades, el remordimiento, la pérdida y los desafíos de vivir con la injusticia a su alrededor. Ayuda a las personas a superar los desafíos propios y celebra los momentos importantes de la vida.
Los pobres ponen sus necesidades delante de Dios en oración, a menudo pidiendo al sacerdote que reconozca las necesidades de sus seres queridos. Lamentablemente, muchos buscan la intimidad con lo divino en las prácticas devocionales de la fe, pero rara vez reciben la gracia de Jesús en los sacramentos de la fe. Puede haber razones para que algunos rechacen la comunión, pero a menudo simplemente ha habido un énfasis excesivo en la vergüenza y el pecado en nuestra catequesis. Jesús quiere que demos la bienvenida a los fieles al altar. Hay demasiada vergüenza presentada en nombre de la Iglesia a los fieles hispanos. Necesitamos hacer un mejor trabajo enseñando la “Alegría del Evangelio”. Dejemos de ser amargos: “Una de las tentaciones más serias que ahogan el fervor y la audacia es la conciencia de derrota que nos convierte en pesimistas quejosos y desencantados con cara de vinagre.” (EG 85)

An Earthy faith
My walk with farm workers introduced me to people like those who followed Jesus. Jesus saw faith in the most common of people. He knew the faith of those who were not trained in synagogues or at the feet of the great masters of scripture. He knew the faith of fishermen, farmers, sinners and saints. They were common people; whose faith was practical and real. The followers of Jesus were close to nature. Their faith was earthy. They listened to him teach about the heavenly Father, the compassion and love of God. He spoke as one with authority and wisdom. He gave hope to the hopeless and forgiveness to the sinner.
It is such a blessing working with people who work the land. The Catholic faith is an earthy faith. It is a faith that is not magical or superficial. It is the faith of people who truly believe that they are loved by God. It is the faith of people who know loneliness, hardship, remorse, loss and the challenges of living with injustice around them. It helps people rise above one’s challenges and it celebrates the important moments in life.
The poor place their needs in front of God in prayer, often asking the priest to recognize the needs of their loved ones. Sadly, many seek intimacy with the divine in the devotional practices of the faith, but seldom receive the grace of Jesus in the sacraments of the faith. There may be reasons for some to decline communion, but often there has simply been an overemphasis on shame and sin in our catechesis. Jesus wants us to welcome the faithful to the altar. There is too much shame presented in the name of the Church to the Hispanic faithful. We need to do a better job of teaching the “Joy of the Gospel.” Let us stop being sourpusses: “One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
