Acompañar el Migrante
Cuando comencé a estudiar español, el p. Enrique López, C.SS.R., me dijo: “Hay que aprender la cultura, la historia, las fiestas y caminar con la gente. Si no vas a caminar con mi gente, no te molestes en aprender español”. Su consejo fue duro, pero atesoro sus palabras y he buscado caminar con los migrantes.
No parecía tan difícil “caminar con mi gente”, pero después de casi treinta años en el ministerio hispano, doy cuenta de que “caminar con la gente” es un viaje de toda la vida. Estoy agradecido por todos los que han acompañado mi vida mientras viajo con los migrantes. Puedo recorrer los mismos caminos de los pobres, pero me doy cuenta de que no puedo entrar en la inseguridad de los pobres.
Una bendición es que los pobres no quieren que ni yo ni nadie más experimente sus penurias y desesperación. Si bien a veces podemos aliviar algunas cargas en la vida, las personas buscan que les quitemos sus problemas. Simplemente quieren que los compañeros estén con ellos en tiempos turbulentos y quieren seguridad para sus seres queridos. La necesidad de que seamos vecinos.

Accompanying Migrants
When I first began studying Spanish, Fr. Enrique Lopez, C.SS.R., told me, “You need to learn the culture, the history, the feasts and walk with the people. If you will not walk with my people, do not bother learning Spanish.” His advice was harsh, but I cherish his words and have sought to walk with the migrants.
It did not sound so difficult “walking with my people”, but after nearly thirty years in Hispanic ministry, I realize that “walking with the people” is a lifelong journey. I am grateful for all who have spiced my life as I journey with migrants. I can travel the same paths of the poor, but I realize that I cannot enter into the insecurity of the poor.
A blessing is that the poor do not want me or anyone else to experience their hardship and desperation. While at times, we may be able to alleviate some burdens in life, people do look for us to take away their problems. They simply want companions are with them in turbulent times, and they want safety for their loved ones. The need us to be neighbors.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
