A Harvest Faith / Una fe de cosecha
Este blog apareció en el blog de padremigrante el año pasado cerca de este tiempo del año. Solo un recordatorio para orar por todas las personas que trabajan en los campos y ponen comida en nuestras mesas. Mientras los cosechadores recolectan maíz, soja, algodón, manzanas, peras, uvas, pasas, nueces, calabazas y todas las delicias de nuestras mesas, quiero reflexionar sobre las bendiciones de la cosecha y la bendición de la tierra misma. Mi caminar con granjeros y trabajadores agrícolas en tiempos de cosecha da sentido a nuestras tradiciones de acción de gracias. Celebremos las “mejores prácticas” y tratemos de hacer más.
Una fe de cosecha
A lo largo del año, me inspira la fe y la dedicación de los agricultores y los trabajadores agrícolas. Los agricultores son los jugadores más locos del mundo. Cuando llega el momento de plantar, compran la semilla, preparan la tierra y siembran con la esperanza de tener una cosecha. La lluvia inconsistente, la sequía y la falta de trabajadores desafían cada cosecha. Muchas áreas experimentan viento, granizo, incendios e inundaciones debido a los cambios climáticos. Las heladas retrasan y destruyen algunos cultivos. Cuando llega la cosecha, las lluvias inoportunas pueden dañar los cultivos, retrasar o desafiar la cosecha de los cultivos. Cuando la cosecha es abundante, los precios del mercado bajan. En la cosecha, las largas horas de trabajo interfieren con la vida familiar.
Apreciar el trabajo agrícola
Cuando era director del Ministerio Campesino en Fresno, dos universidades católicas (Creighton y Santa Clara) me pidieron que organizara una experiencia de enero de granjas en el Valle Central de California. Los estudiantes vinieron durante una semana, para estar expuestos a la relación agrícola de trabajadores y agricultores. Decidí que la mejor manera de que los estudiantes aprendieran sobre agricultura era experimentar las mejores prácticas de agricultores y trabajadores. Mi buena relación con una asociación de productores y con United Farm Workers abrió el mundo de las mejores prácticas en agricultura a los estudiantes. Los estudiantes experimentaron recogiendo naranjas, almorzando con los trabajadores cuando llegaba la lonchera. Visitaron las empacadoras. Recorrieron un viñedo y experimentaron la poda. Pasaron un día en una lechería, experimentando el ordeño de las vacas, cuidando becerros en el vivero, cuidando a las vacas enfermas en la enfermería, observando la oficina y la colección de datos de cada animal en la lechería y un recorrido por las viviendas del personal de la lechería.
La experiencia del ministerio con los campesinos incluyó una jornada en La Paz, sede de la UFW. Celebramos una misa en un campamento de migrantes y otra en un parqueadero de tráileres. Celebramos una fiesta religiosa tradicional con los trabajadores agrícolas en una iglesia o granja.
Más tarde, una de las universidades me dijo que el grupo que venía a Fresno era uno de los tres grupos que experimentaron el acercamiento de la iglesia a los pobres. Cuando los tres grupos se reunieron para contar sus experiencias, el grupo más emocionado fue el que vino a las granjas. Quedaron muy impresionados por la alegría, la esperanza y la fe mostradas por todas las personas en la agricultura que conocieron.
Estemos agradecidos
Mientras vemos trabajadores en los campos, maquinaria funcionando en el campo, incluso en la oscuridad de la noche, camiones que llevan productos a las empacadoras, oremos por los que ponen comida en nuestras mesas. Que estén a salvo y que sean bendecidos con tiempo para estar con sus familias. Oh, Dios bendiga al campesino, ¡Qué viva el campesino!

As harvesters gather corn, soybeans, cotton, apples, pears, grapes, raisins, nuts, squash and all the delights of our tables, I want to reflect on the blessings of harvest and the blessing of earth itself. My walk with farmers and farm workers in the times of harvest give meaning to our traditions of giving thanks. Let us celebrate “best practices” and seek to do more.
A Harvest Faith
Throughout the year, I am inspired by the faith and dedication of farmers and farm workers. Farmers are the craziest gamblers in the world. When it comes time to plant, they purchase the seed, prepare the land and plant their crop hoping to have a harvest. Inconsistent rain, drought and lack of laborers challenge each harvest. Many areas experience wind, hail, fire and flooding due to changing climates. Frost and chill delay and destroy some crops. When harvest comes, untimely rains may damage crops, delay or challenge the harvesting of the crops. When the harvest is bountiful, market prices drop. At harvest, long hours of work interfere with family life.
Appreciate the Farmer and the Farm Laborer
When I was the director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno, two Catholic universities (Creighton and Santa Clara) asked me to organize a January experience of farms in the Central Valley of California. The students came for a week, to be exposed to agricultural relationships of workers and farmers. I decided that the best way for students to learn about agriculture was to experience the best practices of growers and workers. My good relationship with a grower’s association and with the United Farm Workers opened the world of the best practices in agriculture to the students. The students experienced picking oranges, having lunch with the workers when the “lonchera” (the taco truck) arrived. They visited packing facilities. They toured a vineyard and experienced the pruning of the vines. They had a day at a dairy, experiencing milking the cows, caring for the calves in the nursery, caring for the sick cows in the infirmary, discovering the data collection on each animal at the dairy, and a tour of the living quarters of the dairy staff.
The experience of the ministry with the farm workers included a day at La Paz, the headquarters of the UFW. We celebrated Mass at a migrant camp and another at a trailer park. We celebrated a traditional religious feast with farm workers at a church or farm.
One of the universities later told me that the group coming to Fresno was one of three groups to experience the church’s outreach to the poor. When the three groups gathered to tell of their experiences, the most excited group was the group from the farms. They were most impressed by the joy, hope and faith shown by all the people in agriculture whom they met.
Let us be grateful
As we see workers in the fields, machinery moving through the fields even in the dark of night, trucks taking produce to packing houses and storage bins, let us pray for the people who put food on our tables. May they be safe, and may they be blessed with time to be with their families. Oh, God bless the farm laborer. ¡Qué viva el obrero campesino!

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
