Verdadera apreciación de la historia
Crecí apreciando la historia. Cuando era niño, leía a menudo sobre la historia estadounidense, las historias de pioneros y héroes. En sexto grado, nuestra maestra me animó a leer los Evangelios para saber más sobre Jesús. Fui monaguillo y leí las vidas de los santos. Mi interés en convertirme en sacerdote misionero surgió de esas historias. Crecí con padres, abuelos y padres de mis amigos que se formaron a partir de sus historias de vida durante la Gran Depresión, la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la Guerra de Corea. Fue una época emocionante ya que se estaban produciendo grandes avances en la medicina, la ciencia, la tecnología y las comunicaciones.
La historia se desarrollaba a nuestro alrededor cuando el movimiento por los derechos civiles, el Concilio Vaticano Segundo, un hombre caminando sobre la luna y una trágica guerra en Vietnam desafiaron a todo y a todos a adaptarse a la modernización. La adaptación a los cambios en la sociedad, en las actitudes, la fe y la moralidad no ha sido fácil. Algunas personas buscan restaurar la historia pasada, otras quieren un mundo radicalmente diferente al que vivimos hoy, y muchas sufren a causa de los abusos ajenos, conductas adictivas y trastornos de la salud física y mental.
Cuando tuvo lugar el Concilio Vaticano II, fue evidentemente un momento histórico para la Iglesia. En los documentos del Vaticano II se hacen muchas referencias para conectar la renovación de la Iglesia con la historia de la Iglesia. Hasta el día de hoy, me encanta considerar los contextos históricos de lo que está sucediendo hoy. Conocer la historia ayuda a comprender algunos de los acontecimientos de hoy, pero es sólo una parte de la comprensión de lo que está sucediendo hoy. Hay nuevos contextos, cambios que se están produciendo para bien o para mal a nuestro alrededor. Los cambios en el medio ambiente, las acciones políticas, los cambios tecnológicos y la migración global de personas necesitan consideración para tomar medidas responsables hoy. A veces añoro los buenos viejos tiempos, pero éstos sólo nos presentan respuestas parciales a las preocupaciones de hoy.
La apreciación de la historia no justifica los abusos del pasado ni niega la bondad de las personas de fe y valor. La apreciación de la historia es valiosa para promover el bien de la modernización, modificar las direcciones negativas de la modernización y proporcionar medios para mejoras personales, comunitarias y religiosas. Conocer y reconocer nuestra historia es un buen paso para que las personas sean la mejor versión de sí mismas en todo lo que hacen.

True Appreciation of history
I grew up with an appreciation of history. As a child, I often read about American history, the stories of pioneers and heroes. In sixth grade, I was encouraged by our teacher to read the Gospels to know more about Jesus. I was an altar server and read the lives of the saints. My interest in becoming a missionary priest grew out of those stories. I grew up with parents, grandparents and the parents of my friends who were formed by their histories of living through the Great Depression, World War II and the Korean War. It was an exciting time as there were great advances taking place in medicine, science, technology, and communications.
There was history taking place around us as the Civil Rights movement, the Second Vatican Council, a man walking on the moon and a tragic war in Viet Nam challenged everything and everyone to adapt to modernization. Adaptation to changes in society, in attitudes, faith and morality have not been easy. Some people seek to restore past history, others want a radically different world than we experience today, and many suffer because of abuses of others, addictive behaviors and disorders of physical and mental health.
When the Second Vatican Council took place, it was obviously an historic moment for the Church. In the documents of Vatican II, many references were made to connect the renovation of the Church with Church history. To this day, I love to consider the historical contexts for what is happening today. Knowing history helps in understanding some of the events of today, but it is only a part of understanding what is happening today. There are new contexts, changes that are taking place for better or worse all around us. Changes in environment, political actions, technological changes, and global migration of people need consideration for responsible action today. Sometimes, I long for the good old days, but they only present us with partial answers to today’s concerns.
Appreciation of history neither justifies past misdeeds, nor denies the goodness of people of faith and valor. Appreciation of history is valuable in promoting the good of modernization, modifying negative directions of modernization and providing means for personal, community and faith improvements. Knowing and acknowledging our history is a good step for people to be the best versions of themselves in all that they do.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
