La Esperanza migrante
Hace diez años escribí un libro, LA FE del MIGRANTE. Escribí el libro para presentar la fe que he experimentado con los migrantes y los inmigrantes. Mi fe se ha visto enriquecida por mi experiencia de caminar con los migrantes. Las personas que tomaron la decisión de abandonar su país de origen vieron su fe puesta a prueba al dejar su país de origen para buscar vida en otra tierra. La fe los sostuvo en su camino. Una vez que llegaban a un nuevo país, la vida no era fácil ya que a menudo realizaban trabajos peligrosos y no estaban seguros de la seguridad de sus vidas. Su fe fue puesta a prueba con frecuencia y, a veces, no se sintieron bienvenidos en el nuevo país. Es posible que tampoco hayan encontrado apoyo para su fe en las iglesias de los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, su fe sostuvo a muchos en su viaje para crear un nuevo hogar para ellos y sus familias.
He visitado a migrantes y refugiados en ambos lados de la frontera y he descubierto otra virtud en los migrantes. Es la ESPERANZA. La decisión de migrar es un acto de desesperación. Hay tantos peligros en el viaje y hay una incertidumbre constante. La fe apoya al migrante en el viaje, pero es la ESPERANZA de llegar a un lugar donde pueda construir un nuevo hogar. El acto de migrar no es sólo un acto de desesperación. Es una creencia segura de que el destino vale el esfuerzo necesario para llegar a un nuevo hogar.
El año pasado, visitando un campamento al lado mexicano de la frontera, conocí a un hombre que abandonó su país de origen hace once años. Se fue a una nación de Sudamérica. Pasó seis años en esa nación, pero descubrió que si bien podía tener éxito en su trabajo, no podía imaginar quedarse en ese país por el resto de su vida, por lo que se mudó a otra parte de Sudamérica. En ese país no se sentía seguro y no quería que sus hijos crecieran allí. Todavía tenía ESPERANZA, pero no creía que se sentiría seguro en su nuevo país. Se mudó durante dos años a otro país y luego un año a México.
No tenía familiares en México, por lo que quería ir a una ciudad del medio oeste donde había algunos familiares y amigos de su ciudad natal. Tenía confianza en su ESPERANZA de establecer un hogar en los Estados Unidos. Desde que lo conocí en un refugio para inmigrantes, le deseé lo mejor mientras se preparaba para ir a Virginia. Estaba seguro de que allí podría construirse un hogar. Sabía que no estaría solo en los Estados Unidos mientras esperaba conocer a sus primos y amigos que se estaban preparando para recibirlo.
Si te sientes deprimido o asustado, busca la fe del migrante. Su esperanza los ayuda a superar tiempos difíciles. Honrar la ESPERANZA de los migrantes.

Migrant Hope
Ten years ago, I wrote a book, MIGRANT FAITH. I wrote the book to present the faith that I experience in migrants and immigrants. My faith has been enriched by my experience of walking with migrants. People who made a decision to leave their country of origin, had their faith tested as they left their country of origin to seek life in another land. Faith sustained them on their journey. Once arriving in a new country, life was not easy as they often worked in dangerous jobs, and were uncertain of the security of their lives. Their faith was tested often, and sometimes they did not feel welcome in new land. They also may not have found support for their faith in the churches in the United States. Yet, their faith sustained many on their journey to create a new home for themselves and their family.
I have visited migrants and refugees on both sides of the border, and I have discovered another virtue in migrants. It is HOPE. The decision to migrate an act of desperation. There are so many dangers in the journey, and there is constant uncertainty. Faith supports the migrant on the journey, but it is the HOPE of arriving at a place where a new home can be made. The act of migration is not only an act of desperation. It is a confident belief that the destination is worth the effort needed to arrive at a new home.
Last year, visiting a camp on the Mexico side of the border, I met a man who left his country of origin eleven years ago. He went to a nation in South America, He spent six years in that nation, but discovered that while he was able to become successful in his work, he could not imagine staying in that country for the rest of his life, so he moved to another part of South America. In that country, he did not feel safe and did not want his children to grow up in that country. He still had HOPE, but he did not believe that he would feel safe in his new country. He moved for two years in one other country and then a year in Mexico.
He did not have any relatives in Mexico, so he wanted to go to a midwestern city where there were some relatives and friends from his hometown. He was confident in his HOPE to make a home in the United States. Since I met him in a migrant shelter, I wished him well as he prepared to go to Virginia. He was confident that he could make a home for himself there. He knew that he would not be alone, in the United States as he looked forward to meeting his cousins and friends who were preparing to meet him.
If you are feeling down or afraid, seek the faith of the migrant. Their hope carries them through difficult times. Honor the HOPE of migrants.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
