God is love / Dios es amor

God is love / Dios es amor

We admit that we are not worthy to receive the Eucharist, right before we receive this great sign of Jesus love. But those words do not prevent us from receiving his body and blood as the sign of our union with him and his Church. Yet, we have so instilled in the hearts of the poor their unworthiness that many refrain from receiving the great sign of His love.

God is love

God is love. Why is it so hard to keep that message in mind? We get so involved in the difficulties of life around us, that we forget the most basic image of God presented to us in Jesus. We are so engaged in what divides people that we forget what we have in common. The divisions in our families, our communities, our nations and our Church occupy so much of our daily struggles, that we forget why God sent his Son among us. We argue about theology, morality, social responsibility, race, world crises, and anything else that we can criticize, judge and hate.

It is so simple, what can heal and give us hope. It is the love that is God. It is awareness of God’s goodness and mercy.

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…..

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world. (Jn. 3: 16-17)

One of the sorrows of my life is that there are people within our Church who fail to find joy in this simple message of John. Too many people within the Church are discouraged, disillusioned and unhappy. It is not that people want these feelings, but we have created distance between faithful people and the most sacred signs of God’s love. The signs that we call sacraments are withheld for people on the margins of the Church. Not enough preachers take to heart the old missionaries teaching to you preachers. “If someone leaves the Church not feeling loved by God, you did not do your job.”

May we all rejoice in the Joy of the Gospel.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
