Ministerio de acompañamiento
Durante las últimas cuatro semanas, asumí el cargo de Director Asociado de la Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes. He completado visitas a dos diócesis. Fui a ver el bien que se hace por y con los migrantes en las diócesis. Al llegar a ambos lugares, le dije a la gente que quería ver qué estaba yendo bien en el ministerio campesino y ofrecer sugerencias sobre cómo se puede hacer el alcance para atraer a los que están fuera del campo de visión de la iglesia. Nuestro ministerio principal es el de acompañamiento.
Ministerio de Acompañamiento:
- Caminar con los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes y sus familias.
- Caminar con quienes están al servicio de la justicia, la salud, la educación y los derechos humanos de los trabajadores migrantes e inmigrantes. Caminamos con ellos promoviendo la presencia católica en sus obras.
- Caminar con los agricultores y los empresarios rurales involucrados en la vida de la comunidad de inmigrantes rurales.
- Caminar con parroquias y comunidades de fe que acojan a los trabajadores inmigrantes y sus familias.
- Caminar con los líderes diocesanos en la construcción de una mejor relación de parroquias rurales y la diócesis.
Después de dos visitas diocesanas:
Una de las conclusiones más sorprendentes de estas visitas es la conciencia de los desafíos de ofrecer el ministerio católico a los trabajadores inmigrantes aquí como trabajadores invitados bajo el Programa de Trabajadores Agrícolas Temporales H-2A. El trabajo es temporal. Los trabajadores son adultos no acompañados, predominantemente hombres. Los hombres vienen aquí a trabajar, ahorrar y enviar dinero a sus familias y al final de su temporada laboral regresan a sus países de origen. Hay poco contacto con las entidades de la iglesia local, y donde las iglesias locales tienen acceso a los trabajadores, los que participan en el ministerio de trabajadores agrícolas tienen formas muy limitadas de servir a los trabajadores.
Por supuesto, existen desafíos para todo alcance a los pobres, pero existen muchos obstáculos para brindar servicios a los trabajadores presentes con visas H-2A. Habiendo trabajado con trabajadores agrícolas migrantes que no forman parte de los programas de trabajadores huéspedes, es decepcionante el acceso mínimo que tenemos para conocer a dichos trabajadores.

Accompaniment Ministry
For the last four weeks, I have taken on a position as the Associate Director for the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network. I have completed visits to two dioceses. I went to see the good being done for and with migrants in the dioceses. On arriving at both places, I told people that i wanted to see what was going well in campesino ministry and offer suggestions on how outreach may be done to bring in those outside of the church’s field of vision. Our primary ministry is one of accompaniment.
Accompaniment Ministry:
- To walk with migrant farmworkers and their families.
- To walk with those serving the justice, health, educational and human rights of migrant and immigrant workers. We walk with them promoting Catholic presence in their works.
- To walk with farmers and rural business interests engaged in the lives of the rural immigrant community.
- To walk with parishes and faith communities that welcome the immigrant workers and their families.
- To walk with diocesan leaders in building better relationship of rural parishes with one another and the diocese.
After two diocesan visits:
One of the most striking take-aways from these visits is an awareness of the challenges of offering Catholic ministry to immigrant workers here as guest workers under the H-2A Temporary Agricultural Worker Program. The work is temporary. The workers are unaccompanied adults, pre-dominantly men. The men come here to work, save and send money home to their families and at the end of their work season they return to their countries of origin. There is little contact with local church entities, and where local churches have access to the workers, those engaged in farm worker ministry have very limited ways that they may serve the workers.
Of course, there are challenges to all outreach to the poor, but there are many obstacles to providing service to those workers present on H-2A visas. Having worked with migrant farm workers who are not part of the guest worker programs, it is disappointing in the minimal access that we have to meet such workers.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
