Honrar la Fe de los Pobres
Ayer, consideré honrar a los pobres. “No subestimes la fe de los marginados”. El Papa Francisco escribe: “La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe.” (EG. 200) Me alegra que diga que la “gran mayoría” de los pobres tiene fe.
Mi experiencia con los pobres refleja esa afirmación. En 2008 celebré la Semana Santa en un pueblo cercano a donde terminaba el muro fronterizo. El pequeño pueblo de 600 habitantes no tenía un sacerdote que celebrara la Semana Santa durante más de diez años en el pueblo. Solo tienen visitas poco frecuentes de un sacerdote que estaba a más de cincuenta millas de distancia. El Domingo de Ramos, unas cuarenta personas vinieron a la Misa. Cada día celebramos Misa o los servicios del Triduo. También tuvimos catequesis para los niños, varias celebraciones del Vía Crucis para ayudar a preparar las Estaciones vivientes del Viernes Santo. Escuché confesiones todos los días durante tres o cuatro horas. Para el jueves había más de 300 personas en la misa.
Cada día, la patrulla fronteriza estimó que entre 200 y 300 personas intentaban cruzar la frontera en esa región cada día. Cerca de 200 personas se me acercaron cada día para orar por ellos mientras entraban al desierto esa noche. Le di una bendición a cada persona y les dije que no le dijeran a nadie del otro lado que un sacerdote estadounidense los bendijo mientras salían al desierto.
Había un ministro protestante en el pueblo, y el Sábado Santo por la mañana hablamos. Le pregunté cómo estaba y me dijo: “Bastante bien hasta que apareciste”. Preguntó cuántas personas venían a Misa el Jueves Santo. Le dije alrededor de 300. Dijo que el año anterior tenía 200 personas. Ese año solo tuvo 25. Dijo: “Supongo que vinieron a mí porque no había ningún sacerdote católico en la ciudad”. Era un buen hombre, y le agradezco su cuidado espiritual por las personas marginadas.
El Domingo de la Pascua hubo más de 450 personas entre la Misa de la Vigilia Pascual y la Misa del Domingo. También hubo 35 bautizos, ya que mucha gente aprovechó que había un sacerdote en el pueblo.

Yesterday, I considered honoring the poor. “Do not underestimate the faith of those on the margins.” Pope Francis writes: “The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.” (EG. 200) I am happy that he says the “great majority” of the poor having faith.
My experience of the poor reflects that statement. In 2008, I celebrated Holy Week in a town close to where the border wall ended. The small town of 600 people did not have a priest celebrate Holy Week for over ten years in the town. They only have infrequent visits from a priest who was over fifty miles away. On Palm Sunday, about forty people came for the Mass. Each day we celebrated Mass or the Triduum services. We also had catechism for the children, several celebrations of the Way of the Cross to help prepare for the Good Friday living Stations. I heard confessions each day for three or four hours. By Thursday there were over 300 people at the Mass.
Each day, the border patrol estimated that 200 to 300 people attempted to cross the border in that region each day. Nearly 200 people approached me each day to pray for them as they would enter the desert that evening. I gave each person a blessing and told them not to tell anyone on the other side that an American priest blessed them as they went out to the desert.
There was one protestant minister in the town, and on Holy Saturday morning we talked. I asked how he was doing, and he said, “Pretty well until you showed up.” He asked how many people came to Mass on Holy Thursday. I told him around 300. He said that the year before he had 200 people. That year he only had 25. He said, “I guess they came to me because no Catholic priest was in town.” He was a good man, and I thank him for his spiritual care for people on the margins.
On Easter Sunday, we had over 450 people between the Easter Vigil Mass and the Sunday Mass. We also had 35 baptisms, as many people took advantage of having a priest in town.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
