Honor the poor / Honrar a los pobres

Honor the poor

We visited a migrant shelter along the United States / Mexico border that housed about forty guests. While they awaited appointments at the Consulate, the guests pitched in cooking and serving the food to the homeless people living on the streets outside the shelter. They fed nearly 800 people each day. The meals were presented in a dignified manner. Volunteers and migrants prepared and served the food. Rather than receiving food in a line, they seated six to a table as in a restaurant. When the food was brought to the table, the server invited the migrants to offer a blessing of the food. After the prayer, the guests stayed at the table until all had finished. They closed with a prayer before leaving. The table was cleared and prepared for the next group of guests.

The peace and calm atmosphere of that shelter was remarkable when outside the shelter we saw the most impoverished conditions that we saw along the entire border. There were signs of gang activity, addictions, mental health issues and grief in the barrio. For one hour a day, the homeless received more than a meal. They were honored. They were respected. And they did not violate the hospitality that they received.

Do not underestimate people on the margins of society. That shelter in Tijuana was just one of the many that we visited along the border, and over and over, we met people who responded gracefully when they were treated with respect.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
