Viajar por trabajo hoy
Hace cincuenta y sesenta años, el rostro del campesino se identificaba con el migrante que seguía la cosecha del sur al norte y de regreso al sur. Era fácil reconocer a los migrantes. Trabajaban en los campos. Vivian en grupos en viviendas en los campos o en campamentos en las granjas. Permanecían en una comunidad por un periodo de tiempo específico. Cuando terminaba la cosecha, ellos seguían su camino. Las comunidades se acostumbraban al movimiento de los trabajadores durante ciertos tiempos del año. (La Fe del Migrante, p. 42)
Hoy en día, las escenas de caravanas de trabajadores siguiendo las cosechas son poco comunes. Muchos trabajadores pueden continuar siendo trabajadores de temporada, siguiendo los cultivos cuya cosecha requiere mucha mano de obra, pero trabajan dentro de una hora o más desde sus hogares. Pueden trabajar varios cultivos diferentes, con cosechas que duran desde unas pocas semanas hasta varios meses. En lugar de vivir en las granjas o cerca de ellas, regresan a sus hogares cada noche. Los grupos que viajan grandes distancias por oportunidades de trabajar son una porción mucho menor de la fuerza laboral estacional que en el pasado.
Mientras que menos trabajadores siguen las cosechas, pasando largos períodos de tiempo fuera de sus hogares, hay muchas otras ocupaciones con trabajadores que viajan más por su trabajo. Lo hacen en la construcción, la producción de petróleo, el transporte por carretera y en el trabajo impulsado por el turismo.
Se necesita un ministerio religioso al servicio de los trabajadores móviles. En la Iglesia hablamos de ministerios para “Migrantes, refugiados y viajeros”. Hay muchas personas en los Estados Unidos que pasan muchos días, semanas e incluso meses de separación por el trabajo de uno o ambos cónyuges. Estaba hablando con un sacerdote que es capellán de un equipo deportivo profesional. Comparó los viajes de los atletas profesionales y las personas que trabajan en la industria del deporte con los trabajadores migrantes. Puede haber una discrepancia en los ingresos de los atletas y los trabajadores agrícolas, pero muchas de las pruebas de vivir separados de sus seres queridos presentan desafíos para todas las personas. Además, no todas las personas en la industria del entretenimiento y los deportes tienen grandes salarios.
Si bien mi trabajo se enfoca en el trabajador agrícola migrante, espero y oro para que las personas que viajan mucho por su trabajo reciban la atención espiritual que necesitan.

Travel for work today
Fifty and sixty years ago the face of the “campesino” was identified with the “migrant” who followed the crops from the South to the North and back to the South. It was easy to identify the migrants. They worked the fields. They lived in groups at camp housing or in tent cities on farms. They were in a community for a specific period of time. When the harvest ended, they moved on. Communities adjusted to the flow of workers during certain times of the year. (Migrant Faith, p. 39)
Today, the scenes of caravans of worker following harvests uncommon today. Many workers may continue to be seasonal workers, following the crops whose harvest is labor intense, but they work within a one hour or so drive from their homes. They may work several different crops, with harvests lasting from a few weeks to several months. Instead of living on or near the farms, they return to their homes each evening. The groups traveling larger distances between work opportunities are a much smaller portion of the seasonal workforce than in the past.
While less workers follow the harvests, spending long periods of time away from their homes, there are many other occupations with workers traveling more for their work. They do so in construction, oil production, trucking, and working in tourism driven labor.
Religious ministry serving mobile workers is needed. In the Church we speak of ministries for “Migrants, refugees and travelers.” There are many people in the United States who spend many days, weeks and even months separated because of the work of one or both of the spouses. I was speaking to a priest who is chaplain for a professional sports team. He likened the travel of professional athletes and people who work in the sports industry to migrant workers. There may be a discrepancy in incomes for the athletes and the farm workers, but many of the trials of living separated from loved ones presents challenges to all people. Also, not all people in the entertainment and sports industry have large salaries.
While my work focuses on the migrant farm worker, I hope and pray that people who travel much for their work, receive the spiritual attention that they need.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers.
