Holiness is finding joy in hardships / La santidad es encontrar alegría en las dificultades
Dos hombres me contaron su experiencia de deportación. Fue un momento difícil para ambos, pero hubo una sorprendente conciencia que surgió de ese momento. La suya no fue la historia de un cambio en su orden de deportación, o un camino fácil para encontrar la paz en sus vidas. Sin embargo, mientras eran deportados, se hicieron amigos de otros que estaban siendo deportados al mismo tiempo. La experiencia fue de gracia. Incluso si nunca se vuelven a ver, el grupo de deportados experimentó la gracia en este momento tan inesperado.
Los dos hombres experimentaron el arresto y la deportación acelerada. No hubo tribunal, ni cargos por delitos, ni tiempo para que los seres queridos supieran que habían sido detenidos. Fueron detenidos en una oficina de inmigración a cuatro horas de la frontera con México. Después de ser registrados y tomados las huellas dactilares, les dijeron que los llevarían a la frontera. Dependía de ellos ir a cualquier parte de México que consideraran su hogar. Fueron llevados a la frontera con otros siete hombres que fueron detenidos.
Después de salir de San Angelo, Texas, los nueve pasajeros se presentaron. Hablaron de cómo fueron detenidos. Pronto contaron historias de sus experiencias en los Estados Unidos. Al principio su conversación fue informativa, luego contaron sus divertidas experiencias y pronto se reían mucho. Compartieron sus esperanzas, frustraciones, momentos de alegría y momentos cómicos. En un momento, cuando se acercaban a México, dijeron una oración por sus familias y empezaron a cantar cantos religiosos.
Cuando los dejaron en México, se ayudaron mutuamente a ponerse en contacto con sus familias. Los que tenían algo de dinero, compraron el almuerzo para sus acompañantes. Todos se dieron información sobre dónde vivían y números de teléfono.
Cuando los dos jóvenes me contaron su experiencia, no fue una historia trágica, sino la historia de nuevos amigos y esperanza en un momento difícil en la vida de cada persona de ese grupo. Fue una experiencia de alegría y gracia en un momento inesperado.

Holiness is finding joy in hardships
Two men told me of their experience of deportation. It was a difficult moment for them both, but there was a surprising awareness that came from that moment. Theirs was not the story of a change of their deportation order, or an easy path to finding peace in their lives. Yet, while being deported, they made friends with others being deported at the same time. The experience was one of grace. Even if they never see each other again, the group of deportees experienced grace at this most unexpected time.
The two men experienced arrest and expedited deportation. There was no court, no charges of crime, no time to even let loved ones know that they had be apprehended. They were detained at an immigration office four hours away from the Mexican border. After being registered and fingerprinted, they were told that they would be taken to the border. It was up to them to go to whatever part of Mexico they considered home. They were taken to the border with seven other men who were detained.
After leaving San Angelo, Texas, the nine passengers introduced themselves to each other. They talked about how they were detained. Soon they told stories of their experiences in the United States. At first their conversation was informational, then they told of their funny experiences and soon they were laughing a lot. They shared their hopes, frustrations, moments of joy and comic moments. At one point as they neared Mexico, they said a prayer for their families and began to sing religious songs.
When they were dropped off in Mexico, they helped each other make contact with their families. Those with some money, bought lunch for their companions. They all gave each other information on where they lived and phone numbers.
When the two young men told me about their experience, it was not a tragic story, but the story of new friends and hope at a difficult moment in the lives of each person in that group. It was an experience of joy and grace at an unexpected moment.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
