La Iglesia crece por atracción
Ayer, en su audiencia general, el Papa Francisco desarrolló un tema que presentó al inicio de su pontificado, en la Alegría del Evangelio. Su mensaje es oportuno para mí, ya que me estoy preparando para ofrecer dos talleres para catequistas. Es bueno tener en este párrafo el mensaje de que la Iglesia crece por atracción tanto del Papa Francisco como del Papa Benedicto XVI.

Nuestro anuncio empieza hoy, ahí donde vivimos. Y no empieza tratando de convencer a los otros, convencer no: sino testimoniando cada día la belleza del Amor que nos ha mirado y nos ha levantado y será esta belleza, comunicar esta belleza la que convenza a la gente, no comunicarnos nosotros, sino al mismo Señor. Nosotros somos los que anuncian al Señor, no nos anunciamos a nosotros mismos, ni anunciamos un partido político, una ideología, no: anunciamos a Jesús. Es necesario poner en contacto a Jesús con la gente, sin convencerles, sino dejar que el Señor convenza. Como de hecho nos ha enseñado el Papa Benedicto, «la Iglesia no hace proselitismo. Crece mucho más por atracción» (Homilía en la misa inaugural de la V Conferencia General del Episcopado Latinoamericano y del Caribe, Aparecida, 13 de mayo de 2007). No olvidéis esto: cuando veáis a cristianos que hacen proselitismo, que te hacen una lista de gente para que vayas… estos no son cristianos, son paganos disfrazados de cristianos, pero el corazón es pagano. La Iglesia crece no por proselitismo, crece por atracción.
Los dos talleres que preparamos para el Apostolado Hispano de la Diócesis de Baton Rouge invitan a los catequistas a prestar atención a las formas en que Jesús enseñó. Fue a los marginados, a los pecadores, a los leprosos, a los ciegos y a tantos otros, acogiéndolos a una relación con Dios. Invitó a la gente a seguirlo, pero solo sintió tristeza cuando algunos se alejaron.
El Papa Francisco continuó con un ejemplo de enseñanza por amor. Él dijo,
Una vez recuerdo que en el hospital de Buenos Aires se fueron unas monjas que trabajaban allí porque eran pocas y no podían sacar adelante el hospital y vino una comunidad de hermanas de Corea y llegaron, pongamos un lunes, por ejemplo, no recuerdo el día. Tomaron posesión de la casa de las hermanas del hospital y el martes bajaron a visitar a los enfermos del hospital, pero no hablaban una palabra de español, solamente hablaban coreano y los enfermos estaban felices, porque comentaban: “Buenas estas monjas, buenas, buenas” – Pero ¿qué te ha dicho la monja? – “Nada, pero con la mirada me ha hablado, han comunicado a Jesús”. No comunicarse a sí mismo, sino con la mirada, con los gestos, comunicar a Jesús. Esta es la atracción, lo contrario del proselitismo.
Mostremos nuestra fe a los demás con nuestras acciones. Una vez que las personas reconocen a Jesús en nuestras acciones, podemos compartir nuestras creencias y comprensión de la fe. Recuerda que evangelizamos por atracción.

Yesterday, in his general audience, Pope Francis developed a theme that he presented early in his papacy, in the Joy of the Gospel. His message is timely for me, as I am preparing to offer two workshops for catechists. It is good to have in this paragraph the message that the Church grows by attraction from both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI.
Pope Francis: General Audience for January 11, 2023
Our proclamation begins today, there where we live. And it does not begin by trying to convince others, no, not to convince: by bearing every day to the beauty of the Love that has looked upon us and lifted us up. It is this beauty, communicating this beauty that will convince people – not communicating ourselves but the Lord Himself. We are the ones who proclaim the Lord, we don’t proclaim ourselves, we don’t proclaim a political party, an ideology. No: we proclaim Jesus. We need to put Jesus in contact with the people, without convincing them but allowing the Lord do the convincing. For as Pope Benedict taught us, “The Church does not engage in proselytism. Instead, she grows by ‘attraction’” (Homily at the Mass for the Inauguration of the Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, Aparecida, 13 May 2007). Don’t forget this: when you see Christians proselytizing, making a list of people to come… these are not Christians, they are pagans disguised as Christians, but the heart is pagan. The Church grows not by proselytism, it grows by attraction.
The two workshops that we are preparing for the Hispanic Apostolate of the Diocese of Baton Rouge invite our catechists to pay attention to the ways that Jesus taught. He went to the outcasts, the sinners, the lepers, the blind and so many others, welcoming them to a relationship with God. He invited people to follow him, but only felt sadness when some walked away.
Pope Francis continued with an example of teaching by love. He said,
I remember once, in a hospital in Buenos Aires, the women religious who worked there left because they were too few, and they couldn’t run the hospital. And a community of sisters from Korea came. And they arrived, let’s say on a Monday for example (I don’t remember the day). They took possession of the sisters’ house in the hospital and on Tuesday they came down to visit the sick in the hospital, but they didn’t speak a word of Spanish. They only spoke Korean and the patients were happy, because they commented: “Well done! These nuns, bravo, bravo!” “But what did the sister say to you?” “Nothing, but with her gaze she spoke to me, they communicated Jesus,” not themselves, with their gaze, with their gestures. To communicate Jesus, not ourselves: This is attraction, the opposite of proselytism.
Let us show our faith to others by our actions. Once people recognize Jesus in our actions, we can share our beliefs and understanding of the faith. Remember we evangelize by attraction.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
