Hay muchas razones de esta movilidad. En parte se puede atribuir a una mayor facilidad para viajar, pero a menudo se debe a la inestabilidad en muchas naciones del mundo. Esta inestabilidad puede tener su raíz en la economía, la violencia y las guerras. La migración siempre ha sido parte de la historia humana, pero la migración actual trae desafíos únicos, más de las generaciones anteriores.
El Papa Benedicto XVI escribió que, como resultado de la migración masiva, “nos enfrentamos a un fenómeno social de proporciones históricas que requiere políticas audaces y progresistas de cooperación internacional para ser manejado de manera efectiva” (Caritas in veritate, 62, 29 de junio 2009).
En respuesta a la encíclica del Papa Benedicto XVI, Caritas in veritate, el Secretario General de la Comisión Católica Internacional sobre Migración (ICMC) escribió:
La ICMC siente satisfacción de leer como la nueva encíclica, Caritas in veritate, incrusta el asunto de la migración en el pedido de un cambio fundamental en mentalidad, de tal manera recalcando repetidamente más altos niveles de consciencia y responsabilidad. Ciertamente la migración es mucho más que solo otro reto distinto y específico: se trata de una ola de cambio en nuestras sociedades, políticas, identidades culturales y religiones. No es simplemente otro asunto humanitario pidiendo solamente asistencia directa para las victimas, al contrario, permanece como un modelo de cambio insuficientemente definido en las presentes relaciones mundiales. La migración afecta el concepto de la soberanía, y resalta la necesidad de un pensamiento internacional en términos y conceptos de gobierno global. La migración se trata de transición, y es fundamental para nuestro futuro mundial (Génova, 21 de julio, 2009).
La migración es una realidad mundial que reta a los líderes en el mundo de la política, economía, justicia social, educación y religión. En las migraciones anteriores, la jornada era difícil, pero había pocos obstáculos regulatorios cuando el migrante llegaba. Los migrantes se enfrentaban con un clima diferente, una cultura diferente, una dieta diferente y con conflictos con la gente local, pero a menudo había tierra, oportunidad y en algunas ocasiones, eran acogidos en su nuevo hogar. Hoy, la migración es diferente a la de generaciones pasadas, especialmente para los pobres y oprimidos del mundo

We live in a time of vast world migration.
There are many causes of this mobility. It may partially be attributed to greater ease of travel, but often it is due to instability in many nations of the world. This instability may be traced to economics, violence and wars. Migration has always been a part of human history, but today’s migration brings unique challenges, beyond previous generations.
Pope Benedict XVI wrote that as a result of mass migration “we are facing a social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions that requires bold, forward looking policies of international cooperation if it is to be handled effectively” (Caritas in veritate, 62, June 29, 2009).
In response to Pope Benedict’s encyclical, Caritas in veritate, the Secretary General for the International Catholic Commission on Migration (ICMC) wrote:
ICMC is pleased to read how the new encyclical, Caritas in veritate, embeds the migration issue in the request for a fundamental change in mentality, whereby higher levels of conscience and responsibility are repeatedly emphasized. Migration is indeed much more than just another specific and distinct societal challenge: it is about a sea wave of change within our societies, politics, cultural identities and religions. It is not simply another humanitarian issue calling only for direct assistance to victims; rather, it remains a still insufficiently defined model of change in existing global relations. Migration affects the concept of sovereignty, and highlights the need for international thinking in terms and concepts of global governance. Migration is about transition, and is fundamental to our global future (Geneva, July 21, 2009).
Migration is a global reality that challenges leaders in the world of politics, economics, social justice, education and religion. In past migrations, the journey was difficult, but there were few regulatory obstacles once migrants arrived. Migrants encountered different climates, different cultures, different diet, and conflicts with the local peoples, but there was often land, opportunity and even at times, they were welcomed in their new home. Today, migration is different than in past generations, especially for the poor and the oppressed of the world.
